Subtraction trick every KS2 parent should know 👇
My daughter was stuck on 10,000 − 4,793 until I showed her this simple mental maths method.
Instead of borrowing and long methods, we just subtracted 1 from both numbers: 9999 − 4792 = 5207 ✅
Parents, try this at home. It’s quick, fun, and helps kids feel confident in maths again.

Children can say “one, two, three…” but that doesn’t mean they understand what those numbers mean.
Real maths growth starts with number sense, not memorising the sequence.

Parents often ask: Should my child be writing long pieces at home to get ready for SATs?
The truth: short, focused practice works best.
Here’s why ⬇️
✔ Keeps motivation high (no overwhelm)
✔ Builds consistency over time
✔ Prevents fatigue so writing quality stays strong
✔ Lets children master one skill at a time
✔ Fits the SATs approach of building pieces little by little
So instead of forcing long writing sessions, try 10 minutes a few times a week.
This builds confidence and makes writing feel achievable.

Parents often ask me: “How can I help my child improve their writing at home?”
My biggest tip...read regularly.
Children who read widely often:
Imagine settings more clearly
Use rich, descriptive vocabulary
Write with confidence and creativity
It’s not about pushing long reading sessions...just a few minutes daily can build the foundations for better writing.
💬 Do you read daily with your child? Drop a ❤️ if you do!

Here’s a simple way to teach number bonds to 10 in Reception or Year 1.
Why this game works:
✔ Children see the whole number and the parts.
✔ Writing numbers connects the cubes to digits.
✔ Repetition builds fluency, not guessing.
✔ Moving from a clear glass to a cup they can’t see through is the bridge to mental number bonds.
Once they’re confident, this prepares them for:
👉 Number bonds to 20
👉 Number bonds to 100
👉 Times tables

Wondering how to explain odd and even numbers to your child? 🤔
Don’t start with worksheets - start with play.
✨ Put objects into pairs.
✨ Everyone has a partner = EVEN.
✨ One left out = ODD.
This hands-on method works beautifully in Reception and Year 1 because children can see the maths for themselves. Try it with lego, or snacks 🍎 learning odd and even has never been this easy!
👉 For Reception / Year 1, spotting the digit pattern (evens end in 0,2,4,6,8; odds in 1,3,5,7,9) should come later, once your child is secure with pairing.
In Reception/early Year 1, focus on concrete experience: pairing toys, socks, counters.
Build the idea that “odd = one left out, even = all paired.”
Later in Year 1, gently introduce the number pattern as a “trick to help us check,” but don’t expect instant memorisation.

Parents often say: “My child can count all the way to 50!” 🎉
But here’s the truth: counting is memory, not maths.
👉 Real maths confidence comes when children understand numbers:
Knowing what comes before and after
Finding one more, one less
Showing numbers with counters or cubes
This is called number sense, and it’s the foundation for addition, subtraction and place value in Year 1.
✨ Try turning everyday moments into mini games, ask “what’s one more than 7?” while walking, eating, or playing.
The more they understand, the more confident they’ll feel in maths.
