The Engineering College We are the North West’s specialist centre: from our Traineeship to Higher Apprenticeships. We are a registered Group Training Association (GTA).

Located in the heart of industrial Merseyside, The Engineering College was founded in 1998 to combat chronic skills shortages in the engineering, construction and manufacturing sectors. Since then, we have trained more than 10,000 students, contributing to a vibrant, sustainable regional engineering industry. Nationally, GTAs are responsible for developing and delivering outstanding training, for industry by industry.

Looking to take the next step in your engineering career and secure a leadership role?

Engineering College is taking on new HNC students this November.

A Higher National Certificate is the perfect pathway for engineers who have completed their level 3 apprenticeship and want to take on more responsibility within their company.

Why consider an HNC?

✔ Progress into higher-level engineering roles
✔ Improve promotion opportunities
✔ Strengthen your technical knowledge
✔ Support long-term career growth
✔ Open pathways into further education

We have flexible payment options available. Or ask your employer if they'd be willing to support your qualification.

With many of our apprentices going on to senior management roles by levelling up with a HNC.

Visit out website www.theengineeringcollege.co.uk to find out more or email [email protected] to apply today. The deadline is this Friday.

We proudly hosted a VIP visit here at The Engineering College this morning.

Minister for Health, Care and Business Gemma Arias-Vasquez and her team toured our state-of-the-art facility as part their visit to see Balaena's docks and operations and Merseyside's wider maritime sector in action.

It's always an honour for us to showcase the amazing young people we're training here at the college and give them opportunities to meet the people in power, to not only broaden their horizons, but to show first-hand the impact we're making to industry and individuals.

Well, that's a wrap! This summer we've hosted our third cohort of Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited apprentices and today was their final day with us.

We'll be sad to see them go. They've brought such enthusiasm and positive energy to our College, but we're really proud of everything they've achieved.

Now they go back to their home in Freeport, to work in one of the world's largest cruise ship repair facilities and the largest in the Western Hemisphere.

And we know they have what it takes to thrive in such a demanding environment.

A big shoutout to Asia, who has won our GBSL apprentice of the year award! And was interviewed by the BBC during her time here.

As one of the first two female apprentices we've ever taught from GBSL, this could have been a daunting prospect, but her and her teammate Rakai have lead by example and showed that being a brilliant engineer has nothing to do with your gender.

Congratulations to our Balaena metal fabricator apprentices who passed their apprenticeships this summer, celebrating over 4 years of hard work and perseverence.

Chay Moylan and Kane Capseed have particularly impressed our tutoring staff throughout their apprenticeship journey, being nominated for numerous awards along the way, and we are proud to see them both achieve distinctions! Congratulations gentlemen.

William Hough, Alex Ball, Kai White and Harry Luxon Kewley are also now fully qualified metal fabricators!

Congratulations to Balaena on your commitment to these engineers educations. Further proof of what first class engineering firms' belief in young people can do for the individuals and the industry as a whole.

See what our 2026 first year engineering apprentices had to say about their experience so far

and how learning at The Engineering College and in industry has helped them to develop not only their real-world skills, but their confidence and people skills.

Thank you to our trusted partners Marine Specialised Technology Group for encouraging their apprentices to share these illuminating insights.

We're proud to have been working with MST for over 15 years and they are a great example of how we work together with first class engineering firms to develop and nurture first class talent and future leaders.

On his last week here with us before his retirement, our beloved Electrical tutor and training officer Bill delivered some very important paperwork to one of our graduating apprentices.

GIS - Lift Turn Move Ltd Ltd Apprentice Connor Whitehall recieved his EPA certificate, achieving a distinction overall! The ultimate way to cap his four years studying with us as a Engineering Fitter (Electrical) whilst working in industry with our trusted employer partner GIS.

& a bit of an honour to recieve it from the legend that is our Bill Bell in his final week here. All the best for your future Connor. We look forward to seeing what you go on to achieve.
