Hello, I have found that Wilfred Alan Kimber taught at the school, just not sure what years. I am his step son and wanted to inform all who remember him that he passed away on 23rd July this year with his funeral being held in Barrow in furnace Friday 14th August 1:00 pm. I am interested in any photos or other relating as I have found very few of his early years in teaching. Thanks

Back Row right - 1-Mr. Bond, Mr.?, 2-Mr. Brown Maths, Mr. Goodall ?, Mr.?, 3-Mr. Langley?, 4-Mr. Durrant, Science, Middle Row from right. Recognise but forgot names. 5-Mr Latham, 6-Mr. Jones Music, 7-Mr. Ivor Thomas history, then un-numbered Mr. Ramsden. The front row were the most senior teachers of the group. from the right. 8-Mr. Evans (Porky or Jaz which ever you prefer) 9- Mr. Holmes, all the rest remember faces but not names, except 10-Mr. Bailey and the 11-Mrs Woodhouse secretary, - not numbered but between 9 & 10 is Mr. Gilbert and between 11 & 12 is Mr. Williams (French Teacher ), then 12-Mr. Thomas left hand end 13-Mr G. Gooch. Mr. Bond one great teacher, show him respect and you got it back. Mr. Brown, tink again laddie, good shot with a blackboard rubber . Mr Langley, I think did wood or metalwork Mr. Durrant, had an Austin FX4 funeral car. We listen to the First Man in Space. Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, in science lesson. He brought an old Ford car into school for boy's to learn mechanical skills. Told us we would all be replaced by robots and be paid to stay at home. Well he was almost right. Mr. Latham, came off his motorbike on way to school in the winter of 1960/1961 and broke his leg. Please post if you can name some more of them. NOTE thanks to those making correction and giving names. Eventual I will alter the photograph to reflect these changes.

Temple Road School (Main Building) - AKA Prenton Boys and Girls school. But has been the home of Devonshire Primary School since the mid 1970's was 100 Years old in January 1914.

It's History Part Two. For Part One scroll down.
From the original 1914 School Log Book of Temple Road Council School, a very interesting and traumatic first four years emerge. World War One (The Great War), broke out in August 1914 when the school had only been open for six months (almost to the day). Within days of War being declared the headmaster received notification that the military were going to take over the building as a hospital and this happen when the Royal Lancashire Artillery took control and 124 boys and their teaching staff became homeless. Full conversion of the building into a hospital had taken place by August 1915.

On the 31st August 1914 temporary accommodation for the school was found at Mersey Park Council School. However, in November 1914 a visit by more military authorities resulted in this arrangement being withdrawn as this school was also takeover for military to use.

Having found new accommodation in a single roomed building belonging to Prenton Congregational Church, one hundred and fifteen boys were tasked with learning in grossly overcrowded conditions until 28th April 1919. On this date pupils moved back into their educational home, but scholarships continued to be awarded for those who managed to study under such conditions.

On the 10th September 1915 the first record of corporal punishment at the school is to be found, with six strokes of the cane being awarded to one individual for 'truancy and dishonesty'. Due to the whole school being present within the confines of a single room, with all or most pupils present - records show that for the next two months there was 100% attendance, except for two 'very sick boys'.

Twelve boys were transferred to a new High School which opened it's doors in 1925 - this being Rock Ferry High School for Boy's.
