💦We were very pleased to welcome Oli Rogers from the South East River Trust back to Newbold School.💦

First the children revisited their river knowledge about the features of a river and then spent time exploring samples taken from Emm Brook; there were so many little creatures to be identified: shrimp, bullhead fish; cased caddisflies (which wrap themselves in leaves and wood shavings!), a variety of mites and larvae.

Next the children were shown how to work out the quality of the water from the creatures that were found there. It looks like the Emm Brook is pretty good at the moment.

☀️Last week the Early years children enjoyed a stretch and balance class outside in the shade for PE. The children followed the shape and animal postures so well and focused throughout the whole lesson.👟

🌿 Children love sticks! 🌿

At Forest School, sticks are the ultimate open-ended resource, inspiring endless creativity, imagination, and problem-solving. Whether they become fishing rods, bridges, or tools for building dens, the possibilities are only limited by a child’s imagination.

Playing with sticks also helps children develop essential motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and physical strength. Just as importantly, it provides valuable opportunities to learn about safe risk-taking, encouraging children to assess hazards, make sensible decisions, and understand their own physical boundaries.

Sometimes, the simplest natural resources create the richest learning experiences. 💚🍃

🏃Our early years children helped rehydrate the teddy bears 🧸 during their sports day games last Monday. As the temperature☀️ has warmed up again remember to keep yourselves well hydrated too.💦

In English, the children in year 1 & 2 became real authors as they researched different minibeasts and created their own information pages about a chosen insect. 🐜🦋🐞 They discovered lots of fascinating facts and worked hard to write clear, informative pieces for our very own class minibeast book. 📖 The children were so proud of their work and loved sharing their exciting discoveries with their friends. 🌟

The children became young scientists 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬 as they explored the topics of weather and climate ☀️🌧️. We discussed the difference between daily weather conditions and long-term climate patterns before carrying out an exciting tornado in a jar experiment 🌪️. The children were fascinated as they watched the swirling vortex form inside the jar and enjoyed learning about how tornadoes develop in nature. There were lots of excited faces 😲 and thoughtful questions throughout the activity!

🧮 KS2 Maths for year 5 & 6 🟢🟧🔷🔺

In Oak class they based their maths lesson around nature. They looked at hexagons and how bees use the strength of the shape for their hives and the fact that they are also the most efficient shape in terms of wax needed to build them. They experimented with clay to see how by flattening a “flower-shape” of circles created a hexagon in the centre and then tried making tessellating patterns.

They also looked at the Fibonacci sequence and where this spiral-shape could be found in nature. Finishing off our outdoor maths we problem solved to make a 20-faced shape - an icosahedron.

⚽️Tomorrow will be our sports day! 🏃🏻

The children are getting very excited to finally put all their practice PE lessons into action on the day.
We can’t wait to see all the families come together and cheer all the children on. They are going to be amazing 🙌🏼

🥒🍋 Refreshing Waters 🚰 🍊

This week we were keen to encourage the children to drink more water with this heatwave.

The children in Willow and Cherry class were able to choose between oranges, lemons, cucumbers and mint to add to their icy cold water.

They really engaged their senses as they smelt the refreshing scents, used their hands to feel the ingredients and rub the mint to release its natural menthol and essential oils. They used their eyes to make various observations and concentrate as they cut their slices and poured the water and finally, tasted their delicious water.
