I found out today that each year about 27.7 million tonnes of dust from the Sahara reaches the Amazon basin. Which apparently is also one of the reasons why the rainforest has such biodiversity, the dust carries phosphorus, which is a plant mineral. Plants use it for making DNA and RNA (same as animals) and for photosynthesis.

Did you know?
Bees sense the chanting electrical field of flowers! There are very slight changes over a few minutes after a flower has been emptied of its nectar. Bumblebees are slightly positively charged, flowers are slightly negative. Pollination happens because of those charged.

How did we find out? Analysing thousands of codas from Caribbean s***m whales, researchers found the clicks vary in rhythm, tempo, rubato (subtle speeding up or slowing down of the tempo) and added 'ornament' clicks — far more distinct calls than previously catalogued.
Why is this exciting? A combinatorial structure like this is a hallmark of human language, so whale communication may be far richer than assumed — and it gives conservation a new way to listen in.

What it is Satellite analysis found the tropics lost 6.7 million hectares of primary rainforest in 2024 — almost double the previous year, and the first time fire, not clearing, was the leading cause.
Why it matters Rainforests store carbon and generate their own rainfall. Fire-driven loss on this scale releases that carbon and pushes these forests closer to a tipping point where they dry out for good.
