Is your little one starting nursery, preschool, with a childminder or Reception this September? 💛

The summer holidays are the perfect time to gently prepare them for their exciting new adventure. It doesn’t have to be a big job, in fact, we recommend doing just one small activity each week during the six-week break.

Here are some simple ideas:

- Talk about their new setting in a positive and exciting way.

- If possible, drive or walk past the setting so it starts to feel familiar.

- Look at photos on the setting’s website or social media and chat about what you can see.

- If you already have their uniform, let them try it on! Turn it into a fun dress-up session, take lots of photos and tell them how grown up and amazing they look.

- Make shopping for their lunch bag, water bottle, shoes or backpack a special outing. Let them choose their own (where possible) and explain they’ll be using them at nursery, preschool or school.

- Sit together and draw pictures of what they think their new setting might look like, or what toys and activities they hope they’ll find there.

- If the setting is open during the holidays, ask if you can arrange a visit or show-around to help them become familiar with the environment.

Remember, this doesn’t need to happen every day. Keeping it simple and spreading these experiences over the six weeks helps build excitement without becoming overwhelming and by introducing the idea gradually you are helping them become familiar with what’s coming before their first day.

The more familiar something feels, the less scary it often becomes. By September, they’ll already recognise their uniform, know what their lunch bag looks like, have seen photos of their new setting and may even recognise the building when they arrive.

Every child settles differently, and that’s completely ok. These gentle steps simply give them the best possible start to this exciting new chapter.

Our messages are always open if you need advise or some guidance, we are always happy to help🫶
