🎉 Well… I did it — and I got a DISTINCTION! 🏆

Today I completed my End Point Assessment for my Level 4 Learning & Skills Mentor qualification, and I’m so pleased that I achieved a Distinction.

Those of you who follow the page will know that I’m usually on the other side of this, teaching, assessing and supporting our students through their own qualifications, so it has been quite an experience being the learner again!

My assessment involved a live mentoring session, questioning around my mentoring practice and a professional discussion, so there has definitely been plenty of revision going on behind the scenes over the last few weeks. 📚

Mentoring is already a big part of what I do at HTTA, supporting students, tutors or members of our team, but this qualification has really made me look more closely at how I mentor.
One of my biggest takeaways has been that good mentoring isn't about having all the answers or telling someone what they should do. It's about listening, asking the right questions, helping someone reflect and ultimately empowering them to find their own way forward.

I’m a huge believer that as educators we should never stop being learners ourselves, and there is always something we can improve or develop in our own practice. Its also good to remind us as assessors/IQAs what it truly feels like as a student going through the assessment process 🙏

So today I'm allowing myself a little celebration. 🥂, and a glass of fizz (on a school night 🤭🥳)

FACIAL TIP: A good facial should never be exactly the same for every client. 💆‍♀️

Before choosing products or starting your treatment, take time to properly assess the client's skin.

Look at:

✔️ Skin type and current condition
✔️ Areas of dryness or dehydration
✔️ Oiliness and congestion
✔️ Sensitivity or redness
✔️ The client's main concerns
✔️ Their current skincare routine

Your consultation and skin analysis should guide the treatment that follows.

Learning to perform the steps of a facial is important, but learning why is what develops you into a confident facial therapist.

It's something we focus on throughout our facial training at HTTA. 💛

🎉 A HUGE congratulations to four of my Education and Training students! 🎉

Today, they successfully completed and passed their microteaches! 👏

We enjoyed four very different sessions, covering baby massage, creating signature treatments, facial cleansers and an introduction to EFT.

Each learner demonstrated confident communication, thoughtful preparation, positive learner interaction and a range of teaching and assessment methods.

They also showed that great teaching isn’t about everything going perfectly. It’s about adapting, remaining professional and continuing with confidence, even when technology decides not to cooperate! 😅

Microteaching can feel incredibly nerve-racking, but all four stepped outside their comfort zones and should be extremely proud of what they achieved.

Well done to each of you, another important milestone completed on your journey to becoming qualified educators! 🎓✨

📚 Today, I’m the student!

I’m spending part of today revising for my Level 4 Mentoring End Point Assessment this week — and it’s reminded me that knowing something and being able to confidently talk about it under assessment conditions are two slightly different things! 😅

So, I thought I’d share a few of the things I do when I’m revising, because they might help some of our students too.

📝 1. I don’t just reread everything
I pull out the key words, models and concepts I need to remember and create short prompts. The aim is to trigger my memory rather than memorise pages of notes.

🗣️ 2. I practise saying my answers out loud
This is a big one for me. If your assessment involves professional discussion, questioning or explaining your practice, practise actually speaking about it. Something can make perfect sense in your head and then disappear the second someone asks you a question!

❓ 3. I test myself
Instead of reading the answer first, I ask myself the question and see what I can remember. Then I go back and fill the gaps.

🔗 4. I connect theory to real examples
Rather than just remembering the name of a model or theory, I think:
What is it? Why would I use it? When have I used it? What impact did it have?

That makes it much easier to talk about naturally.

🖍️ 5. I use colour and highlighting
Not entire pages in fluorescent yellow 😂 — just key words, important phrases and things I know I need to remember.

🧠 6. I revise in manageable chunks
I’d much rather have a focused revision session, take a break and come back to it than sit staring at the same page for hours when nothing is going in.

And probably the biggest reminder I’m giving myself today:

The goal isn’t to recite a textbook. It’s to understand what you do, why you do it and be able to explain it.

So if you’re one of our students currently revising for an assessment, exam, practical or professional discussion — I’m right there with you this week! 🙋‍♀️📚
