Building Biology Association

Building Biology Association The BBA is an independent organisation whose purpose is to promote the awareness, understanding, design, construction and use of healthy buildings.

Building Biology is the holistic study of the interrelationships between humans and their man-made environment. It is the science of creating healthy, life enhancing buildings. Buildings today often contain inherent chemical, physiological and biological risks as a result of materials and processes employed by the construction industry in a drive to minimise costs and build times. The UK currently

falls behind European and international standards of best practice concerning the use of many materials. On average we spend about 90% of our time indoors and 30% in bedrooms. With these exposure times even low concentrations of harmful agents can affect our health in the long term and cause chronic diseases. The Building Biology Association is an independent organisation whose purpose is to promote the awareness, understanding, design, construction and use of healthy buildings.

The Building Biology Institute IBN checklist for building materials is used by Gale & Snowden when considering materials for projects - this includes an assessment of materials and components and their composition.

“Understanding the science of how the natural world works gives us the tools to produce elegant and efficient design solutions and to create buildings and integrated landscapes that need little energy and enhance our health and nourish us.”

Great to be at the IBN Building Biology Consultants Conference last week and over the weekend at Verden, Germany. We met some wonderful people, learnt much and also presented our work on Saturday morning. One of the highlights was seeing the 5 storey straw bale building where the conference was being held - Marvellous! Thank you to the IBN for organising the Conference.
