Children who have anxiety around attending school or are home schooled. As a teacher of younger children for 18 years and an SEN teacher for 7 years, I have felt the increasing pressure within the classroom to get to know and help each individual child. It is a must in my eyes and one of the most important parts of teaching. You have to get to know the child in order to know how to teach them. Ea
ch child is not just a number and a level or grade to me!! They are fantastic individuals with different personalities and learning styles. Children also need to be confident in order to learn, we only get this by building relationships. It upsets me when children get angry, upset and extremely worried when they cannot complete what is asked of them. In a SATs test years ago I can recall a boy having an asthma attack, I was so upset and I thought what was this little boy thinking, what was our profession teaching him!!! Of course we are following what we are told to do!! I have 2 children of my own, a 13 year old and a 18 year old, I have seen for myself how worried they get about school work. Especially my eldest who, due to an interesting teacher in year 1 thought he could not write!!! He can, we spent some one to one time and his confidence increased ten fold! I can also remember crying at home when I was younger when I could not understand certain maths concepts, my mum and dad were upset because they could not help me. After a while my mum was so upset that she asked my maths teacher if he would tutor me. After this I ended up gaining a GCSE. It may not have been an A but it was a pass and I was ecstatic!! These are all the reasons that I want to be a tutor, I know it helped me as I had more confidence in a one to one and small group situation than in the whole class situation.
