I am currently in the Middle East, and had the opportunity today to run an "imagination in nature" session for a home school group. It was a wonderful mix of kids from around the world, who currently call Kuwait home.
We found a little green space and played some games together... I then introduced them to "The Gruffalo" story (that had even the older kids engrossed)! We then created our own clay creatures that Might be hiding in the Kuwaiti Oasis! Amazing creations...imaginative ideas...free outdoor play...tree climbing and fun ❤

If you want a foraging activity to keep the kids excited and busy this summer, then look out for some Damson trees 🌳
They're starting to ripen nicely (best about September, but loads now are ready too). Then take them home and make some Jams 🙌🏻
Great for kids to connect with nature and also learn about living off nature's freebies. Blackberries too will soon be ready for crumbles, jams and allsorts of other delicious foods 😋 such fun childhood activities.

(The second pic is an example of the tree and how they grow. The darker they are, the more ripe and less sour)

We tried something new today at forest school - baked salmon and cod. We wrapped them in foil with either lemon or parsley and left them in the fire (through the rain storm 🤪🤣). It turned out so good, and it was wonderful to see kids trying new foods (along with the veggie soup that was made too). Year 5 have loved cooking this half term outdoors and it's been great to see them getting stuck in and trying new flavours and foods. It always seems to taste better on a fire 🔥

I'll show you, but I won't do it for you"...Apparently I say this all the time at forest school 🤣🌱 who knew!
The thing is we all learn at different paces, and learning and resilience comes as we try and fail and try again. We use problem solving skills and imagination in the figuring out , and we feel increased esteem and confidence when we do it for ourselves - great joy and satisfaction. Not to mention, we have new skills when we learn to do it for ourselves... skills we can use again and again.
Some kids need showing more than others and that's fine, but I will rarely do it for any of them, because I'd hate to deprive them from all of that growth, joy and satisfaction 👆🏻👆🏻🌳 so yes, I'll show you as often as you need, but I won't do it for you!
Ps - today we made chocolate orange cake and baked banana in the fire, crafted weapons and built dens. It was super!

Don't mind me... just gathering some dead wood to make swords and viking catapults with next week 🤣✌🏻 I now see so many possibilities when I look at sticks on the forest floor! 🌳

Yesterday we had a first session of with Year 5. It was so much fun and enjoyed by all.
One of my faves was seeing the children work together to create a picture of a living thing they found while exploring the woodland... we had a birds nest, spider web, dragonfly with reeds and thunderbugs. I especially loved this woodlouse on his log 🪵 we then played some fun games and cooked bread on sticks 🌳🌱

Willow whips (I discovered today) are excellent for a host of nature craft and accessories for outdoor play. A simple crown with rosemary for decor 👑 transforms a child into queen of the forest or a fairy princess maybe? So many possibilities. It could quite easily have been moulded into a sword, shield or anything the child imagines.

Can't wait to do these at birthday parties and future forest school sessions. If your child has a birthday coming up get in touch to discuss a nature themed party, using forest school activities.

Wow moments at forest school today... making popcorn on the fire, making bird feeders for the birds, and having lots of fun playing 🌱🌿

From buds to blossom, and shoots to waking wildlife, signs of spring are everywhere right now. Why not take your little ones out and be nature detectives... seeking out all those beautiful and amazing signs of spring!

Today at forest school we made string "magnifying glasses" (tie a knot to make a string circle), to help us focus on small circles of nature. It helped us be more mindful, soak up nature and notice the smallest of things which are otherwise overlooked as we run and play. We saw woodlice, ants, tiny water droplets on blades of grass, buds on trees, the patterns of Bark, clouds in the sky and moss on trees 🌳 why not give it a go - it's a wonderful activity to just be and watch. Kids can even draw what they saw if they want to, and pop it in a nature journal.

We made bread and jam on the fire (on sticks and in the ash), played a big game of capture the flag (with the children erecting dens as their bases) and found magic in nature! Another glorious day at forest school 🌳🌱 🔥
