Week 11 – Bold & Expressive Portraits
This week our students explored the exciting world of expressive portrait painting, taking inspiration from the vibrant work of featured artist Samro Addo.

Working with acrylic paints, they began by learning how to mix convincing skin tones before creating energetic portraits using confident, bold brushstrokes.

By building up darker tones first and layering colour over the top, they discovered how a portrait doesn't have to be highly detailed to capture character and personality. In fact, leaving parts of the painting deliberately unfinished creates a fresh, lively quality that makes each piece feel full of energy.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is seeing students become more confident with their brushwork. As they learn to paint more freely and trust the process, they often produce portraits that are full of expression and individuality, each reflecting their own unique style.

With our end-of-term exhibition now only a few weeks away, there's a growing sense of excitement in the classroom as students begin to see just how much they've achieved. It's always wonderful watching confidence grow as each painting brings them one step closer to proudly exhibiting their work.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟏𝟎 – 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐬
This week our students celebrated our four-legged friends with a joyful acrylic painting inspired by the personality and charm of our favourite dogs.

Working with bold acrylic colours and textured brushstrokes, students explored how thicker layers of paint can bring movement, character and expression to their artwork.

Whether painting from one of our carefully chosen reference photographs or capturing the unique personality of their own beloved dog, each painting quickly developed its own individual story and charm.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this project is seeing how every student interprets the same subject differently. As confidence grows, students become more adventurous with colour, texture and brushwork, creating paintings that are full of life, warmth and personality.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟗 – 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬
This week our students escaped to the coast with a wonderfully textured mixed-media project inspired by the British seaside.
Using layers of paint, charcoal and even pieces of newspaper – a nostalgic nod to traditional fish and chip paper – students created atmospheric coastal scenes full of character and texture.

By combining different materials and techniques, they discovered how simple layers can bring a painting to life while enjoying the freedom to experiment and develop their own individual style.

One of the joys of our classes is seeing how the same starting point inspires such a wide variety of unique and personal artwork. As confidence grows, students become more adventurous, often surprising themselves with what they can achieve.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟖 – 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐬
This week our students embraced the colours of an English summer with a beautiful watercolour study of flowering patio pots.

Although the finished paintings look wonderfully detailed, students soon discovered that by working step by step, even more challenging subjects become enjoyable and achievable.

Along the way they developed drawing skills, explored colour harmony and experimented with masking fluid to preserve bright highlights and add depth to their work.

It's always a pleasure to see confidence continue to blossom as each student develops their own style and creativity. Every painting is unique, and the results are full of colour, character and the warmth of summer.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟕 – 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠
This week our students explored the fascinating world of urban sketching, capturing the charm and character of Lisbon's iconic yellow tram.

For many, drawing buildings and perspective can seem daunting. But by breaking the scene down into simple shapes and working step by step, they quickly discovered that even complex subjects become enjoyable and achievable.

Using fine liner and watercolour, students developed new skills while learning to capture atmosphere, movement and the unique character of a place. The finished sketches are full of confidence, personality and a wonderful sense of place.

It's amazing to see the confidence, creativity and artistic ability that can develop in just a few short weeks with encouragement, practice and a supportive learning environment.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟖 – 𝐀 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞
This week our students journeyed to the sun-drenched vineyards of rural France, exploring colour, atmosphere and the expressive possibilities of watercolour and watercolour pencils.

At first glance, a landscape filled with rolling vineyards, distant villas and terracotta rooftops can seem quite ambitious. But by building the painting step by step, students discovered how simple techniques can create depth, harmony and a real sense of place.

Rather than focusing on perfect realism, this project encouraged students to capture the warmth, charm and character of the scene. Through careful colour choices and layered washes, they learned how artists use colour relationships to create mood and atmosphere.

Many students were also surprised by the versatility of watercolour pencils, discovering how they can add detail, texture and vibrancy while still retaining the softness of traditional watercolour.

It's been wonderful to see confidence continuing to grow as students become more adventurous with colour and increasingly trust their own artistic decisions.

Each painting has developed its own personality, proving once again that there is no single "right way" to create art.

We're incredibly proud of this week's collection of vineyard scenes, full of colour, warmth and the promise of a French summer.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟓 – 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨

It's wonderful to see our Berkhamsted students growing in confidence and becoming more adventurous with their artwork. Our classes are a lovely mix of new Foundation students and returning students, all learning and creating together.

This week, everyone tackled a striking camel portrait inspired by the colours and character of Cairo. Animal portraits are particularly well suited to oil pastel, allowing students to explore bold colour, expressive mark-making and rich texture.

Using a combination of oil pastel and coloured pencil, students learned how to build depth, add detail and bring their subjects to life. The colourful bridles and distinctive features of the camels provided plenty of opportunities for creative interpretation and experimentation.

Whether new to art or returning to develop existing skills, our students rose to the challenge beautifully. The finished pieces are full of personality, colour and confidence – a wonderful reflection of how far they have come in just five weeks.

𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟒 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐬
Inspired by summer evenings at the beach, this project uses oil pastels on toned paper to create soft golden dunes beneath an atmospheric blue-violet sky.

Blending colours allows students to explore the medium’s richness, while gestural marks describe grasses and sand. An oval format will encourage consideration about composition, while colour harmony and use of complementary tones strengthens understanding of colour theory.

Week 3 Synchronised Swimmers
Building on the water studies from Week 1, this watercolour pencil project introduces faces and figures through a glamorous synchronised swimming theme. Using limited colours, students learn how to lower chroma and blend hues to achieve a range of subtle skin tones.

The project revisits body and facial proportions while exploring foreshortening, movement and pattern, resulting in a striking composition.

This week’s project captures the charm of a classic red London bus in a loose, illustrative style. Combining gouache with watercolour pencil and soft washes, students explore how sketchy marks scumble through colour to create texture and movement.

A gentle reintroduction to perspective is included, alongside an impression of background. The bold red hues create vivid results, balancing structure with spontaneity.
