What does active play and movement mean for young children?

Young children experience the world with their whole bodies. Before they can explain their ideas with words, they learn through climbing, balancing, carrying, building and exploring what their bodies can do.

You might notice your child climbing everything in sight, creating obstacle courses, balancing along walls or repeating the same physical challenge again and again. These moments are helping them build confidence, solve problems and discover their own abilities.

Dr Morvwen Duncan breaks down the importance of active play and movement, exploring how physical experiences support children’s development, confidence and understanding of the world around them.

Children don’t move simply because they have energy to burn. Movement is one of the ways they learn. Every jump, climb and balancing act helps children develop coordination, resilience and problem-solving skills.

Supporting active play can be as simple as exploring the outdoors, visiting a park or giving children opportunities to move, create and experiment.

Epsom Downs Mascot Race 🏃‍♂️

On Monday, Marvin and some of our Monkey Puzzle team headed to for the fifth year running to take part in the Mascot Race! And what a result, Marvin came 8th out of 28 mascots🏆

The family fun day is held annually to raise money and awareness for the Children's Trust.

The Children's Trust is the UK's leading charity for children with brain injury. They deliver rehabilitation, education and community services through skilled teams who work with children and young people, and their families.

This year, almost £9,000 was raised for the Children's Trust.

Marvin and the team had so much fun meeting up with all the mascots and supporting such a special cause.

We'll see you again next year!

What does imagination and creativity mean for young children?

Imagination is much more than fun. Through pretend play, storytelling and creative expression, children experiment with ideas, explore emotions and make sense of the world around them.

You might notice your child turning the sofa into a pirate ship, a cardboard box into a rocket or the kitchen into a café. These moments of imagination give children the chance to explore different ideas, practise relationships and understand their everyday experiences in their own way.

What have our nurseries been up to this week?

Monkey Puzzle Horsham enjoyed Cooking Club, exploring ingredients while developing independence, fine motor and early maths skills.

Monkey Puzzle Twickenham had a busy week of parachute fun, artwork, smoothie making and science, encouraging teamwork, creativity and curiosity.

visited the Maritime Museum, learning about history, transport and the wider world.

Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery Timperley picked their home-grown carrots and green beans and enjoyed a taste test, learning about growing food and healthy eating.

Childcare Service visited Surrey Docks Farm by bus and train, exploring transport, the local community and farm animals.

Monkey Puzzle West Norwood explored The Colour Monster through sensory rice play, supporting colour recognition and imaginative play.

Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery Seer Green brought The Gruffalo to life through role play, encouraging imagination, confidence and communication.

Monkey Puzzle Woodford welcomed families to their Open Day, enjoying activities together through play and exploration.

Monkey Puzzle Kingston got stuck into the mud kitchen, developing creativity, imagination and sensory skills.

Monkey Puzzle Grange Road enjoyed baking, exploring ingredients, textures and measuring.

Cisc Puzzle enjoyed a bug hunt, developing observation skills and curiosity about the natural world.

Cooking club was in full swing at Marvin’s Deli today 🥣

At Monkey Puzzle Horsham, Marvin’s Deli is our very own child-friendly cooking space, where children can get hands-on with food, explore ingredients and learn practical skills in a fun, relaxed environment.

But it’s about much more than making something tasty. As children measure, mix, pour and follow instructions, they’re developing important skills such as fine motor control, early maths, language, confidence and independence.

They also get to make choices, try new ingredients and experience the pride of creating something themselves. Helping build positive attitudes towards food and healthy eating.

Step inside our sensory room 🫧

Some of our nurseries have dedicated sensory rooms designed to help children explore, create, relax and learn through their senses.

Through light, sound, movement, music and different textures, children can explore at their own pace. They can make choices, experiment and discover how things work.

Sensory rooms can also provide a calm and comforting space when children need a little time to pause, regulate and feel settled.

These experiences support so much more than sensory development. They can help build confidence, communication, creativity, problem-solving skills, coordination and emotional wellbeing, while giving every child the freedom to engage in a way that feels right for them.

It’s a space where children can explore freely, follow their curiosity and enjoy learning through their senses.

It’s been a busy week full of opportunities for our children to explore, discover and learn through play and real-life experiences.

Monkey Puzzle Horsham have been busy updating their nursery alongside animal-themed sensory play. Sensory play supports curiosity, language and hands-on learning. How lovely are their new Buddy Bench and reading corner?

Monkey Puzzle Harrow went tomato picking, learning about where food comes from and how things grow while developing physical skills.

Monkey Puzzle Ealing started their Little Kickers football season and enjoyed a trip to the park, supporting coordination, balance, gross motor skills and confidence.

Monkey Puzzle Solihull brought the beach to Solihull with sandy toes, sandcastles and deck chairs. Sand play supports fine motor skills, creativity and sensory development.

Childcare Service have started revamping their garden with a new mud kitchen, ready for lots of messy, sensory and imaginative play.

Monkey Puzzle Woodford travelled to the Maldives with passport checks, sand and clear blue water. Imaginative play supports language, confidence and understanding of the wider world.

MONKEY PUZZLE MAIDENHEAD Preschool have been exploring planets and the solar system, encouraging curiosity and early scientific thinking.

Monkey Puzzle Wokingham met some special farm animal visitors, including sheep and bunnies, supporting confidence, empathy and an understanding of living things.

Monkey Puzzle Southgate Toddlers became little first aiders, learning important life skills and how we can care for ourselves and others.

Monkey Puzzle Chesham enjoyed a beach party with children, parents and staff, creating opportunities to build relationships and make special memories.

In the early years, every experience is an opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
