We have some exciting news to share!

Growers Row Shared Garden has been awarded 'Level 4 - Thriving' in the 2026 It’s Your Neighbourhood Award, presented by The Royal Horticultural Society and East Midlands in Bloom.

A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed their time, expertise, materials, and hard work to make Growers Row the thriving garden and community space it is today. We also extend our gratitude to our funders who made this project possible.

Join the Magical Lantern Walk with a handmade lantern of your own.

Drop in to the cosy Great Hall at Oakham Castle on Saturday 7th November, where we will create amazing lanterns with willow, tissue paper and glue! Our team will be there to guide you.

£3 per lantern
Drop-in, we will be there from 11am, until 2pm
Oakham Castle, just off the Market Place in the heart of Oakham!

This week we welcome Stop Smoking Specialist Kajal Karki and the Roving Health Care Unit at Souper Space!

Drop in for a FREE bowl of delicious, nutritious soup and chat with Kajal, who will be joining us at the table. Soup and chats will be served from 1 pm to 3pm

Parked outside the Town Hall, the Roving Health Care Unit will be offering FREE health checks and FREE vaccinations from 10am to 4pm.

Soaking up the sunshine at Growers Row this week, we cleared more garden beds, planted Spring bulbs with a group of children, harvested carrots, chard, and herbs, and showed new visitors around from Cancer Support Group - Stamford and Rutland. We enjoyed tea and coffee kindly donated by Oakham In Bloom and a pop-up darning workshop!

There was plenty of wildlife this week: a hunting kestrel, some fabulous insects, and we stumbled across some mice and a young rabbit... and tried not to disturb them.

Another lovely day in this peaceful and productive garden.

Six years ago, in October 2020, we opened Rutland Community Fridge in Uppingham, followed soon by another in Oakham, and later another in Greetham!

Over the last six years, thanks to volunteers, supermarket staff, local businesses, funders, the good folk who come to collect the food and take it home, and a small team of behind-the-scenes staff - together - we managed to save a whopping 80 tonnes of good surplus food from landfill!

Well done everyone! Let's keep up the good work.

If you are new to the Rutland Community Fridges, everyone can use the fridge - when you do, you are helping the environment and the current food waste problem.

Food is free, though we do ask for a donation when you visit, which helps to keep this project running.

An unusually wet and slightly cooler day did not deter our many regular visitors or some new ones at Growers Row this week. We weeded some beds, moving summer Geraniums to their winter-protected home. Spotted self-sown Sweet Peas, Honesty and Wall Flowers ready for 2027. More seed sorting, Dahlia picking and harvesting of Chard and Tomatoes for sharing, as well as cake for a member’s birthday. The polytunnel lounge was a hive of activity for the first time since April.

What happened at Lerntree this week?

We picked food from the garden for our shared lunch, and bunches of flowers to take home. There is a big interest in games at the moment: cards, chess, and words. We had a game of 'spinner dinner' with our big Hazel stick and spun around in the hammock. The sundial we made read an hour early, and we wondered if that has anything to do with being so close to the end of daylight saving?

Out and about, we found a 'human sundial’, and when the cloud burnt off we had a go at reading the time with shadows. We found great climbing-trees, collected walnuts, and explored another local historical village, all while enjoying the extended warm autumnal weather.
Lerntree is a progressive education provision in Rutland, running one and a half days a week, for ages 7+
