Amanda Seyderhelm - Practical parenting advice for happy kids

http://www.helpingchildrensmileagain. Play Therapy for Kids and practical advice for parents to raise happy kids.

Play Therapy helps children who have ADHD and autism and who are struggling to be accepted, to accept themselves. Children aged 5-11 years often struggle to articulate their feelings verbally, and play therapy gives them a safe space to play out their feelings through art, music, movement and dance, puppets, masks, creative visualisation and therapeutic storytelling. I am thrilled to announce that I have been appointed as a regional trustee for NACCC - the National Association of Child Contact Centres for the Midlands.

It is hard to imagine but more than a million children have no contact whatsoever with one of their parents after separation.

Unfortunately, some children experience behavioural issues including antisocial behaviour, distress, unhappiness, and both physical and emotional problems.

NACCC is the only charity in the UK dedicated to solving this problem by providing safe spaces where children can meet the parents they don’t live with. We oversee around 350 contact centres across the UK, run by a network of nearly 3,000 volunteers.

I am excited to be joining NACCC as a Trustee and help support their mission that parenting shouldn’t end when relationships do.

If we have learned anything from Harry telling his story it's how unbearably difficult life can be without support when you are a bereaved child.

He has written openly about his experiences with alcohol and drugs to try and numb his pain. One of the problems associated with this is that we can't selectively numb emotions.. When we numb pain, we also numb joy, as Brene Brown writes.

I am pleased to hear and read that he has been working with a who he credits in the book for helping him unravel years of unresolved trauma. What a blessing that relationship must be. A safe space in which to explore and process his feelings and emotions.

1 child in every classroom is bereaved. Maybe you know someone? Don't assume they are receiving support. Schools are stretched to provide bereavement support, which is why my book, Helping Children Cope with Loss and Change published by contains a toolkit to support .

No child should suffer as Harrv did. alone. Let’s make sure they don’t.

The Hero Lives Within Us 03/11/2022

The hero lives within us all.

Children are familiar with this character in life.

It hides in their dreams and nightmares. Shows up in their struggles. Appears in their fights.

The hero has many faces.

Names.

Identities.

In Play Therapy their hero appears as characters, in stories, role play, drawings.

What children aren’t aware of is how resilient their hero is. How resourceful. Creative.

Why Acceptance is Key to Developing a Warm Relationship in Play Therapy 02/11/2022

For play therapy to ‘work’, the therapist must develop a warm, friendly relationship with the child, in which good rapport is established early on.

This Axline principle appears straightforward - isn’t this the type of relationship that most therapists aim to create with clients during sessions?

Play Therapy Helps Children Explore Feelings in Creative Ways 01/11/2022

Talking about problems can be difficult for children. A child may not know the language to describe their feelings. They may not have the words to describe why they are behaving they way they are. A child may not be able to explain what they find difficult. In these cases, a child will find your question, ‘how are you feeling’ a little intrusive.

It's Never About the Spider 27/10/2022

Children worry about spiders.

Parents worry about children worrying.

Must kill the spider! Get rid of the child's anxiety.

No.

Killing the spider won't kill the child's anxiety.

Become curious about the spider.

Where has it come from?

What does it need?

Is there anything the spider wants to say to us?

Think of the spider as a stand in for what the child is really anxious about.

It's giveaway time.

Do you know a school that champions children's emotional health?

The useful toolkit in my latest book, Helping Children Become the Heroes of their Stories, has been designed for use with children both individually and in class groups. The storytelling toolkit will enable children to see themselves as the hero of their own story, and life, and to reinstate a sense of optimism and self-empowerment in the face of the pandemic challenge.

If you know a school or child setting that could benefit from this guide please just tag them in the comments. I will be selecting 5 lucky winners on 30th October.

When describing a child’s drawings be aware of the symbols they contain. As psychotherapist Dennis McCarthy says, the difference between a beautiful picture and a symbolic one is in the latter’s containment of energy, which when accessed will bring about change.

This drawing was made by a 7 year old boy who is on the autistic spectrum. What do you think these images might be symbolic of?

The drawing is a medium through which the child expresses their feelings about themselves, and both their inner and outer worlds.

Today is World Mental Health day.

The past few years have given us adults a LOT to think and worry about. But we are not alone.

The pandemic has massively impacted children's mental wellbeing.

Take a moment today and check in with yourself and your child, share stories and really listen to what your child is telling you without interrupting.

Collective Grief and How to Talk to our Children about the Death of Queen Elizabeth II 10/09/2022

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has made grievers of us all.

Who can forget her televised address to the nation during the Pandemic, reminding us that, 'we will meet again'? Uniting us in the depths of our socially distanced despair. Comforting us with the prospect of hope, and renewed connection, like any loving and good enough parent does.

Who will comfort us now, we wonder?

Would you like to know more about helping children's mental health?

Everyone expects a child to be affected by changes such as bereavement, divorce, adoption, fostering and relocation. But not everyone knows how it is affecting them, when it is affecting them or how to help the child.

As an experienced Play Therapist, I enable affected children to make sense of their feelings and find a comfortable way to express themselves and their worries through their natural language of play.

I am passionate about spreading the word about the importance and value of therapeutic storytelling to anyone working with children. This led me to writing "Issac and the Red Jumper", a picture book for 4-12 years about child bereavement. To be read by a parent, counsellor, teacher to a bereaved child. My latest book, "Helping Children Cope with Loss and Change: A Guide for Professonals and Parents" is due for release in August.
