This time of year can feel expensive for parents buying uniforms, bags, stationery, and endless “must-haves” in the shops.

The good news? For GCSE Maths, the actual essentials are simple. Alongside pen and pencil, you will need:

🔹 Protractor for measuring angles
🔹 Pair of compasses for drawing circles and arcs
🔹 Scientific calculator
🔹 Ruler showing centimetres & millimetres

✨ A few handy tips:
✔️ A 15cm ruler is often more practical than a 30cm one
✔️ Check calculator packaging states it is approved for GCSE exams. I recommend the Casio fx-85GTCW.
✔️ Get a clear pencil case so it can be used in exams.

All about GCSE Maths exams:
Different schools use different exam boards, the common exam boards for GCSE maths in England are AQA, OCR and Edexcel. The board dictates the style and content of the exam but all are based on the same curriculum.
There are 3 exams taken at the end of the GCSE maths course. They all last 90 minutes and are worth an equal amount of marks. Only the first one is non-calculator, the second two exams allow use of a scientific calculator.
The grades 9-1 are awarded, with 9 being the highest. Grade 5 is regarded as a 'good pass' and Grade 4 a 'pass'. Check with intended place of study for specific requirements - some further study requires higher than passing grades. If a grade 4 is not achieved in year 11, you are required to resit the exam.
There are two possible entry tiers for the exams: Higher and Foundation. Higher tier contains the most challenging questions, awarding up to grade 9. However, score less than grade 4 and you will be 'ungraded'.
Foundation tier allows grades 1 up to a maximum 5 to be awarded, with less content tested than higher tier. Grades 4 and 5 are the same regardless of which tier has been sat.
