“Clean” steel is not necessarily ready to coat.

A coating specification can require more than visible cleanliness. Surface profile, soluble contamination and climatic conditions may all need to be checked before application begins.

If those controls are missed, the problem can be built into the coating system before the first coat has cured.

Dangle supports industrial coating and fabric-maintenance work where preparation, access and application need to be planned as one controlled process.

An offshore inspection may identify the defect—but it does not complete the maintenance task.

The next decisions determine whether that information becomes a safe, timely intervention: how the work area will be reached, whether the conditions suit the proposed method, what repair system is required and how the completed work will be verified.

Our newest blog looks at that full maintenance chain across offshore wind assets. It considers:

• how rope access can support targeted inspection and repair
• the role of drone data in locating defects
• blade erosion, composite repair and protective coatings
• the effect of weather windows on access and curing conditions
• how GWO and IRATA competence support different parts of the work

The important point is that inspection, access and repair should not be treated as disconnected activities. The strongest maintenance strategy links the defect data to a defined scope, competent people, suitable access and an auditable close-out.

Rope access is not always a straight journey from the anchor point to the work area.

A deviation deliberately redirects the rope line. It may be introduced to guide the system around an obstruction, reduce unwanted contact with part of a structure or position the technician closer to where the work needs to take place.

For someone beginning IRATA Level 1, this changes how the route feels. Instead of moving only vertically, the technician must recognise the redirected line, manage their position and pass the deviation while maintaining control of the rope access system.

The important part is not simply handling the connector. The trainee needs to understand what the deviation is doing, anticipate how the ropes will move and keep their equipment organised throughout the manoeuvre.

It can initially feel less intuitive than ascending or descending on a clear vertical line. Instructor demonstration and repeated practice allow the trainee to break the process into stages, understand the load and become more confident moving through the change in direction.

This reel shows a single deviation being demonstrated during practical IRATA Level 1 training at Dangle Academy in Belfast.

These boys will be back on the town after successfully passing their IRATA assessment following a hard week of training!

A fantastic result all round and a huge well done to everyone for the effort they put in throughout the week.

Great to have Vertical World UK Ltd and Northern Ascend training with us.

Congratulations, lads — very well deserved.

Our next course begins Monday 2nd November and we’re down to the final spaces remaining. Visit dangleacademy.com to secure your space!

Corrosion is not simply a surface or appearance issue. In process industries, it is an asset-integrity risk with direct implications for reliability, maintenance and loss of containment.

The Health and Safety Executive describes corrosion as the largest single cause of plant and equipment breakdown in the process industries. Its guidance also says operators should have appropriate inspection and maintenance programmes in place to prevent corrosion causing loss of containment.

That makes corrosion control a connected process—not a coating decision made in isolation. It involves understanding the environment and substrate, identifying deterioration, selecting a suitable protective system, preparing the surface to the required standard, controlling application conditions and inspecting the completed work.

The scale of the opportunity is significant. AMPP projects that established corrosion-control practices can reduce the global cost of corrosion by 15–35%.

For difficult-to-access assets, the access method must support the specified preparation, application and inspection process. A protective system can only perform as intended when the work behind it is properly planned and controlled.

GWO Enhanced First Aid training runs at Dangle Academy in Belfast from 19–21 October 2026.

In a wind-turbine environment, professional medical support may not be immediately available. Enhanced First Aid develops the knowledge, judgement and practical capability needed to manage a casualty for longer and provide an enhanced level of response in a remote working environment.

The three-day course moves beyond basic first-aid actions through realistic scenarios, structured casualty assessment, use of appropriate equipment and communication with medical support. Participants must make decisions, monitor the casualty and adapt their response as a situation develops.

This training is particularly relevant for technicians and teams whose role or emergency arrangements require enhanced first-aid capability within the wind industry.

Does your role or workforce need a higher level of first-aid preparedness? View the October course or contact our team to discuss the appropriate GWO training route:

GWO Advanced Rescue Training returns to Dangle Academy in Belfast from 7–9 October 2026.

Advanced Rescue Training develops the practical capability to access and rescue an injured person from challenging locations inside a wind turbine generator. The Combined ART course brings together the hub, spinner and inside-blade scenarios covered by ART-H with the nacelle, tower and basement scenarios covered by ART-N.

Across three practical training days, participants work with rescue equipment, casualty-handling methods and realistic turbine scenarios. Single-rescuer skills are integrated into the current standard, helping technicians prepare for situations where the available response may be limited.

Participants must hold valid GWO Working at Heights, First Aid and Manual Handling records. Anyone booking a refresher must also meet the relevant ART validity requirements.

Upcoming Course | EUSR MATS Basic Tower Climbing & Rescue Renewal — 5 October 2026.

Renewal training should be more than an administrative step. It gives experienced tower climbers structured time to revisit the controls, equipment checks and emergency actions that may not form part of every working day.

This one-day course begins with classroom delivery at Dangle Academy before moving to practical training and assessment at an approved tower location. The day revisits key areas including hazard identification, personal fall-protection equipment, harness fitting, fall-arrest and work-positioning systems, emergency planning and rescue practice.

Candidates complete both knowledge and practical assessment, demonstrating that they can apply the required controls in the working environment—not simply recall them on paper.

The course is intended for technicians renewing an existing MATS Basic Tower Climbing & Rescue qualification. If you are unsure whether this is the correct renewal route, our team can check your current registration before you book.

Our next course runs on 5 October 2026. Contact Dangle Academy to confirm eligibility and reserve your place.

Our next GWO Basic Safety Training course runs at Dangle Academy in Belfast from 12–15 October 2026.

BST provides the recognised safety foundation used across wind-turbine roles. The four-day programme combines four core modules:

• Fire Awareness
• Manual Handling
• Working at Heights
• First Aid

The value of BST is not simply holding four training records. Participants practise how to identify hazards, work methodically at height, respond to fire and medical emergencies, and apply safer handling techniques in situations relevant to the wind industry.

It is an important starting point for people entering turbine installation, maintenance, inspection and other wind roles, as well as for employers building a site-ready workforce. Further technical training may still be required depending on the role and work environment.
