From caving to industrial rope access

Modern industrial rope access did not appear from nowhere. Many early techniques and items of equipment were adapted from caving, potholing and climbing—particularly the methods used to ascend and descend fixed ropes.

But modern IRATA rope access is not simply caving transferred into the workplace. Those ideas were developed and formalised into a managed two-rope, fail-to-safe system of work, supported by training, assessment, supervision, equipment controls and rescue planning.

IRATA’s own history began with solving difficult maintenance problems in the offshore industry. What started with shared ropework principles has developed into a globally used method for safe industrial access.

Our next IRATA course includes five full days of focused, practical training at our purpose-built Belfast centre, followed by an independent assessment on day six.

Suitable for new Level 1 candidates and experienced technicians progressing to Levels 2 or 3, subject to IRATA requirements.
