On Tuesday 19 May 2026, Professor Elizabeth Malcolm, a leading scholar of Irish and Irish Australian history, died in Melbourne following a long illness, aged 77. In 2000 Elizabeth was appointed the inaugural Gerry Higgins professor of Irish Studies at the University of Melbourne, where she taught Irish history until her retirement. She was one of the founders of ISAANZ and one of the editors of Australasian Journal of Irish Studies (AJIS). Teacher, mentor and friend to many, Elizabeth will be greatly missed. She is survived by her son Hartley and her brother Robert. May she rest in peace. Funeral details to be announced.
