Scientists involved in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence have been discussing new international procedures for handling a possible detection of alien technology.
The International Academy of Astronautics' SETI Committee has been participating in this week's International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Turkey.
The discussions follow the adoption of updated SETI protocols earlier this year, replacing guidance last revised in 2010.
The new framework addresses how researchers should verify unusual signals, share evidence, protect scientific data and communicate findings to governments and the public.
It also recommends international consultation before humanity attempts to respond to a confirmed extraterrestrial signal.
A committee meeting scheduled for 7 October was due to consider further arrangements, including a dedicated post-detection group.
The guidance reflects growing recognition that identifying extraterrestrial intelligence would present scientific, political and ethical challenges.
