NUS-USI, NUS UK and NUS Liberation stand together against conversion practices. Everyone deserves to live freely and safely, without attempts to change or suppress who they are.

We’ve responded to Northern Ireland’s Conversion Practices (Criminalisation) Bill, backing a ban and calling on MLAs to protect LGBTQ+ people.

University/college can already be stressful enough without having to worry about whether you can afford to get home.

For many students, home is where their support system is. It is family, familiarity and a chance to reset. But when the cost of travel becomes another bill they cannot afford, students can end up spending weeks away from the people they rely on most.

 No student should be isolated from their support network because the journey home costs too much.

And making public transport more expensive will only push that journey further out of reach.

Almost 8,000 fewer planned college enrolments. A 10% drop in apprentices at SERC.

 

These cuts put up barriers to education and leave learners uncertain about their futures. If the Executive is serious about lifelong learning, it must invest in the courses, places and apprenticeships that make it possible.

You budget. You plan. You make it stretch. Then the cost of getting to where you need to be changes.

That is the reality students are telling us about.

Public transport is how students get to class, work, placements and home. When fares rise or services disappear, there often isn’t another affordable option.

Translink is currently consulting on potential changes to fares and services, with no final decisions made yet. The consultations remain open until 30 September.
