Burscough Village Primary School and Nursery What a brilliant start for your Caterpillars! It’s lovely to hear how well they’ve settled into their very first Monster Phonics session and enjoyed meeting them! Building those early listening skills through environmental sounds is such an important first step.

Today we started our first Monster Phonics DfE Validated Phonics Programme session with our 2 year olds. The children were fantastic and made excellent progress tuning in and listening to environmental sounds. They also enjoyed being introduced to our Monsters.

Congratulations to our avid bookworm, George, who has completed Stage 6 of the Monster Phonics DfE Validated Phonics Programme books.

The 10 fiction and 6 non-fiction books in this series include alternative pronunciations of the letter sounds "ir", "ur", "oa", "oo" (short), "oo" (long), "oe", "ou", "ow" (long O), "ow" and "ue", exciting phonetic wow words such "terrific" and colour-coded guidance to highlight the letters where special attention must be paid.

Phonics in Wales is changing.

Under the Welsh Government’s Foundational Literacy & Numeracy Plan, Systematic Synthetic Phonics will be a clear expectation in every school in Wales, with statutory year-on-year guidance coming in 2027.

Points 5 and 6 of our 10-point summary explain what this means. Monster Phonics is a DfE-validated SSP programme, fully aligned with Curriculum for Wales.
