At the Early Years Conference in Enniskillen today. Fascinating keynote by Darryl Edwards outlining reduced physical activity in our children. Only 2.4% of 3-4 years old meeting guidelines and children play outside so much less than past generations.

NI Education Inspections Bill
NEU will continue to monitor the progress of the inspection legislation closely which passed this evening (Monday 1 June 2026) and challenge any proposals that adversely affect our teachers. We continue to engage with policymakers to ensure the voice of the profession is heard and that the rights and interests of teachers are protected.
We are committed to safeguarding your professional status, wellbeing, and working conditions and will engage with the Education Committee as part of our next steps and continue to outline our concerns about the current drafting of this bill.

Today NEU along with all unions within the Northern Ireland Teachers’ Council (NITC) wrote to the Minister of Education to inform him that we are formally in dispute with him.
The dispute relates to the failure of the Department of Education to publish a plan which is capable of fully implementing the recommendations from the Independent Review of Teacher Workload.
The plan as it currently stands is simply not acceptable to the NITC.
NEU remains committed to resolving this dispute through meaningful dialogue but have now reached the point where we must begin the process of preparing for a ballot for industrial action which will lead to members taking action from early September.
We will be in contact with members and reps on the steps that we need to take before the statutory notice is served.
