Newsletter March 2022

On the 23rd of March, the team and I had the great pleasure of welcoming a number of Fermanagh Folk to our ‘What’s the Craic’, Oral History gathering event in Fermanagh House. Recognising the importance of collecting these oral histories, volunteers shared personal memories, stories and yarns relating to all aspects of life and what it was like living, working, and growing-up in and around the Erne. We recorded and listened to some of the most fascinating tales, including; the life of a Forester, growing up Enniskillen ‘Back Streets’, school years, living at Florence Court, thatching, and much more… Unfortunately, we had a few cancellations due to Covid, however, we had a great response and gathered some truly charming memories which will subsequently feature within the LELP Memory Map, securing these histories for generations to come! Among the attendees, we also had two of our registered volunteers who put into practice recently acquired skills they had learned during their online training with us – well done ladies! Elaine, Anthony and I would like to thank everyone who supported the event, and joined us on the day, we truly enjoyed meeting every one of you! “WHAT’S THE CRAIC” - Hands of Power!
Join us at Fermanagh House on Wednesday the 23rd of March, and share with us your memories and stories of local history and heritage. We would love to hear about your recent past and what life has been like in the last 50-100 years, in and around the Erne. Do you recall Fermanagh during the Second World War? What impact did the arrival of thousands of troops have on your everyday life? Perhaps you worked or lived on one of the large estates in the past. Do you or a family member have a story to share about the Police Barracks, or the workhouse? Or perhaps smuggling, and the canny ways folk devised to beat the customs men back in the day! Help us bring together as broad a range of stories as possible to feature with in our unique, online Memory Map.
