CCEA AS1 Economics students, this is one of the biggest foundation topics on the course.
Scarcity and choice appear throughout Economics. If you understand this topic properly, you can use it in questions on opportunity cost, PPFs, specialisation, economic systems and resource allocation.
This infographic covers:
✅ The basic economic problem
✅ Scarcity, choice and opportunity cost
✅ Production Possibility Frontiers
✅ Movements along and shifts in the PPF
✅ Why economies may operate inside the PPF
✅ Specialisation and the division of labour
✅ Free market, planned and mixed economies
A strong answer does not just define these concepts. It explains how they link together.
Perfect for AS1 Economics revision.

🛑 CCEA Business Studies & Economics Students: Read This Before Your Exam! 🛑
The difference between an 'A*' and an average grade isn't always down to just knowledge; it's often your technique on the day.
We've analysed years of CCEA examiner reports for A-Level Business Studies and Economics, and the verdict is clear: top marks are lost when students fall into the same avoidable traps, sitting after sitting.
Examiners don't lie. They've seen it all. Now, we're sharing what separates the top scripts from the rest.
🚀 Here is your definitive guide to maximising your marks:
🚫 Scrap the Introductions in essays: The mark scheme has no allocation for "scene-setting." Stop warming up and start earning marks with your very first sentence.
🎯 Master Your Command Words: A CCEA examiner has a specific response in mind for 'Analyse', 'Evaluate', 'Discuss', and 'Assess'. Learn the difference. If you ignore this, you lose marks before you’ve even started.
📊 Use ALL the Data: A figure on its own is just decoration. Benchmark, comparison, or derivation of data is what defines analysis.
📉 Explain Every Diagram: An unlabelled diagram with no link to your written argument costs marks rather than gains them. If you draw it, you must explain it.
⚖️ Weave in Evaluation: Don't just bolt it on at the end as an afterthought. Evaluation is where A2 marks are won. Consider significance, assumptions, short-run vs long-run implications, and real-world context throughout your answer. Think like an analyst, not a dictionary.
⏱️ Sort Your Timings: Know your allocation per section and stick to it rigidly. An over-answered question is just an under-answered one elsewhere. You won't find extra minutes in the exam hall.
📝 Plan BEFORE You Write: Take thirty seconds for structured thought. It prevents three pages of drift. Know your framework before you commit to that first sentence.
🎯 Answer the Actual Question: The highest-scoring scripts all have one thing in common: they answer the precise question that was asked. No padding. Be purposeful from line one.
The first paper is closer than it feels, but the preparation window is still open. Use it wisely.
This guide is your roadmap to success. Share it with a friend, bookmark it, and refine your exam strategy to make every second count. Good luck!
