To mark European Day of Languages, we asked our pupils to reflect on the richness of language and share their favourite words from across the globe.

A special thank you to Caleb, one of our talented pupils studying Spanish, and Moving Image Arts. Combining his love for languages and media, Caleb interviewed staff and fellow pupils to capture a wonderful variety of favourite words and perspectives from across our school community.

At Belfast Royal Academy, language learning is central to our ethos. We are proud to offer French, German, Latin, and Spanish through to A-Level, equipping our students with deep cultural awareness and communication skills for an interconnected world.

Language opens doors to new perspectives - what is your favourite word in another language, and why?

The annual FOTA Quiz took place last Friday night in the Jackson Suite, hosted by the amazing Dr Springer. After 5 years of trying, the winning team 'Put a Springer in your Step' took home the trophy.

Thank you, as always to Dr Springer, to Mr McCarey for his help on the night, to Belfast Royal Academy Friends of the Academy for organising the event and to all the quizzers for participating in this important fundraiser for the school.

This month, Belfast Royal Academy will host an exhibition celebrating the life and work of artist and alumnus, Elizabeth Shaw.

๐Ÿ“… Monday 19th - Friday 23rd October 2026
โฐ 3.30pm - 6.00pm
๐Ÿ“ School Library, Crombie Building

Born in Belfast in 1920, Elizabeth lived on York Street and attended Belfast Royal Academy before moving to London, where she trained at the prestigious Chelsea School of Art under iconic sculptors and painters like Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland.

After moving to Berlin in 1946, she became a celebrated satirical caricaturist, painter, and writer. She illustrated over 40 books, including works by literary giant Bertolt Brecht, and wrote beloved children's classics such as Der kleine Angsthase (The Timid Rabbit). Her warm, characterful illustrations earned her major international awards, including the Kรคthe Kollwitz Prize. Today, although relatively unknow in her city of birth, her work continues to charm generations of children across Europe and a primary school in Berlin is even named in her honour.

The exhibition will showcase a selection of archive material telling the story of Elizabeth Shawโ€™s life and work and is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our schoolโ€™s rich history.

Sincere thanks to former Principal, Hilary Woods, for her generous gift to the School - a new digital scoreboard for the all-weather pitch at Roughfort. The scoreboard was unveiled last Saturday with Mrs Woods in attendance to celebrate a win for our 1st XI team.

We are very grateful to Mrs Woods for her commitment to the provision of top-rate sporting facilities, and for her ongoing support of the school.

We are delighted to celebrate an incredible achievement from last year, when 59 pupils became Accelerated Reader Millionaire Readers โ€“ the highest number ever achieved since AR was introduced to the Academy in 2011/12.

A huge congratulations to our top reader, Sofia, who read an incredible 4,921,411 words!

Take a look at our league table of all 59 millionaire readers - a fantastic reflection of the enthusiasm and dedication our pupils showed throughout the National Year of Reading.

And thereโ€™s no slowing down. Accelerated Reader has already got off to fantastic start this year, with 185 books read and quizzed upon already!

We are looking forward to seeing how many more books our pupils read, quiz upon, and enjoy over the coming year.
