This amazing photograph captures the scene on 23rd of September 1937, when the Union Castle liner Capetown Castle was being prepared for launch at the Belfast shipyard of Harland & Wolff. The sheer size and scale of the yard's operations opens out for all to see. One of the most fascinating things to be captured in this image are the two steam cranes which were used to pull massive pieces of engineering products manufactured in the engine and boiler works around the yard on it's internal railway. Remarkably, they still survive today, awaiting restoration, in a quiet corner of 'the yard' overlooking the RIver Lagan.
