What a fantastic welcome and celebration event today, marking both the Mid-Autumn Festival (Friday 25 September) and the European Day of Languages (Saturday 26 September) at Queen’s McClay Library Auditorium!

Jointly organised by the QUB iRise Staff Network and The Language Centre, the event brought together a cohort of 45 staff members, students and their families, creating a friendly and inclusive space to meet new people, reconnect with colleagues and enjoy the celebrations together.

Through pressentations and a selection of short videos, participants discovered and discussed how the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, Korean Chuseok, Vietnamese Tết Trung Thu, Japanese Tsukimi and other moon-related traditions share themes of harvest, family and togetherness, while retaining their own distinctive customs, foods and stories.

The event also marked the European Day of Languages, celebrating its 2026 theme, “Languages unite!” — a timely reminder of how languages and cultures can bring people together across borders and communities.

China Research Forum NI Inaugurated

Last Tuesday (23 June), Northern Ireland experienced its hottest day of the year and the inaugural China Research Forum NI generated an equally vibrant atmosphere of academic exchange and discussion. Hosted at the McClay Library Auditorium, Queen's University Belfast, the Forum brought together around 30 participants to explore a diverse range of China-related topics through lively interdisciplinary dialogue.

Jointly organised by the Chinese Students' and Scholars' Associations of Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University, under the guidance of the Association of British Chinese Professors (Northern Ireland Region) and Queen's Language Centre, the Forum marked the beginning of a new student-led platform for China-related research, collaboration, and community engagement.
