BTEC HND Graphic Design course at the Belfast Metropolitan College

Graphic design is the art of communicating messages, concepts and ideas using text and images, both on screen and in print. The results of the graphic design process can be seen in websites, magazines, dvds and cds, video games, film credits, books, posters and flyers – in fact anywhere that text and images appear
together. A graphic designer’s job involves producing exciting, engaging

HND Graphic Design students were lucky enough to take part in a creative workshop a few Thursdays ago as part of Belfast Design Week .

The workshop, titled ’Meanwhile Spaces’ focused on design thinking and applying the skills established across their studies to date to solving the creative challenge set by the workshop leader and founder of Belfast Design Week Karishma Kusurkar.

In their challenge, the groups of students were asked to consider how office car parks usually occupied from Monday-Friday could have a "meanwhile use" on Saturdays and Sundays when they are typically empty.

Through an action-packed morning of creative exercises, they came up with some great ideas and visualised and presented these to the other teams as well as a panel of guest industry judges.

All involved where incredibly impressed by the standard of work and creative solutions produced in the short period of time provided.

In the end the winning idea was ‘Bus Till Dawn’, an event and social space offering an inclusive and accessible night out with the guarantee of a safe route home at the end of it through links with local transport providers. 🚍

Huge congrats to our 2021 Graduate Student Emma Rodgers on representing Belfast Met at the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP of the Adobe Certified Associate World Championship last week.

Emma has made us all incredibly proud in taking to the (virtual) world stage after her win in the UK and Ireland Championship and showcasing her ability across the Adobe suite.

Making it to this stage of the competition is a clear reflection of the hard work she has put into the development of her skills in using software, as well as her ability to work under extreme pressure and critical thinking in dealing with client briefs. Definitely one to watch in the future!

Well done Emma 👏

Essential Tools for Beginners in Graphic Design || The Art Career Project 08/11/2020

Some familiar recommendations in this article (Adobe junkies rejoice), little exploration of alternatives, and interesting to read (particularly after discussing Saul Bass and sketching) the next recommendation was a Wacom tablet, not paper and pens! Is this how YOUR graphic design practice looks? Also just realised the cover image for this article is littered with non-computer tools. Sigh.

How Graphic Designers Tell Stories with Design || The Art Career Project 07/11/2020

Being a graphic designer isn't just about making pretty pictures ... it's about storytelling.

How Graphic Designers Tell Stories with Design || The Art Career Project Storytelling is an essential part of our world and is a major creative element in books, movies, and television shows. In fact, every part of your own life can be broken down into a story, and those stories can be told through design. A graphic designer tells a story with their design in order to cr...

Bold - and potentially controversial - moves for Pantone.

Presenting “Period”, a new red shade created to break the stigma around menstruation and promote period positivity. Swedish healthcare brand Intimina came to Pantone Color Institute to develop this custom color in support of their global campaign to make menstruation more visible and normalize this most normal of
bodily functions.

Pantone and Intimina worked alongside a gynecologist and consulted research published in Medical News Today to develop the shade, but by no means is this supposed to be an accurate depiction. Instead, we created a visual identifier of a red shade that would help Intimina leverage the power of color to share their story.

“An active and adventurous red hue, courageous Period emboldens people who menstruate to feel proud of who they are. To own their period with self-assurance; to stand up and passionately celebrate the exciting and powerful life force they are born with; to urge everyone regardless of gender to feel comfortable to talk spontaneously and openly about this pure and natural bodily function.”
