In September 2013, Laura Cunliffe of Hoyland, England became angry after discovering the remains of her goldfish and believing her kitten, Mowgli, was responsible. Cunliffe admitted placing the black-and-white kitten inside a microwave and switching it on. Although the timer was set for five minutes, she said she removed Mowgli after approximately one minute.
Mowgli initially survived. Cunliffe attempted to cool the kitten with water before taking him, wrapped in a towel, to her stepsister’s home. Mowgli later died from his injuries. The RSPCA said the kitten would have suffered terribly over a prolonged period.
Cunliffe admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. In March 2014, a judge sentenced her to 14 weeks in prison, describing what she had done as an act of “utterly horrendous cruelty.” She was also banned from keeping animals for life and could not seek a review of that ban for five years.
