You're going to ask AI to help you plan tomorrow's training.
Before you type anything...
What information does AI need from you?
I'll start:
• Who the athletes are
• Where we are in the season
• What we've done recently
• Tomorrow's objective
• Time/facility constraints
What would you add?
👇
The interesting bit isn't the prompt.

Before you ask AI for an answer, ask yourself: have I actually given it enough to work with?

If I asked another coach, “What should I do in training tomorrow?” their first response would probably be:
“Well… tell me more.”

AI is no different.

Before I ask it to help, I think about:
👤 Athlete — Who am I working with?
📍 Context — Where are we in the programme?
🎯 Objective — What am I actually trying to achieve?
⚙️ Constraints — What can’t I change?
📊 Recent training — What have we already done?

And that's definitely not an exhaustive list.

So, coaches, what would YOU add?

What information do you think AI needs before it can give you genuinely useful coaching input?
👇

Add yours in the comments.

The interesting bit isn't writing the perfect prompt.

It's deciding what context actually matters.

Before I write a single zone-specific set, I run it through these 5 questions.

Save this one. 🪛
Which of these do you skip most often? Honestly curious.

Why coaches get generic answers from AI

One of the most common complaints I hear about AI is:
“The answers are too generic.”
Often they are.
But sometimes that's because we've asked a generic question.

Imagine another coach walked onto poolside and said:
“What session should I do tonight?”

What would you ask them?

Who are you coaching?
What level are they?
Where are you in the programme?
What have they done recently?
What's coming next?
What are you trying to achieve?
What constraints are you working with?

You'd need context before you could give them a useful answer.

AI is no different in that respect.
I've ended up using a very simple structure:

CONTEXT → OBJECTIVE → CONSTRAINTS → REQUEST

The interesting thing is that forcing myself to provide those four things doesn't only improve the AI response.
It forces me to clarify my own thinking first.

And that's increasingly where I think the value lies.

The objective isn't learning how to write clever prompts.

It's learning how to describe the coaching problem clearly enough that AI can help you interrogate it.

Don't just give AI a better prompt. Give it a better coaching problem.

Most coaches don't need a library of “magic prompts
They need to stop making AI guess.
Try this:

CONTEXT — What's happening?
OBJECTIVE — What are you trying to achieve?
CONSTRAINTS — What can't change?
REQUEST — What do you want AI to help with?

The prompt gets better because the thinking before the prompt gets better.

A set can have the right distance and the right pace and still completely miss its zone.
Here's the part that actually decides it 👇

I've been working on something.

A lot of the AI conversation aimed at coaches seems to sit at one of two extremes.

“AI will revolutionise everything.”

Or:

“AI has no place in real coaching.”

I don't particularly believe either.

I've spent a lot of time using AI inside my own coaching—not theoretically, but for planning, analysis, communication, administration, creating resources and, increasingly, challenging my own thinking.

Some things have been genuinely useful.

Some have been rubbish.

And I've made plenty of mistakes figuring out the difference.

So I started writing it down.

That turned into this.

AI FOR COACHES

How to Use Artificial Intelligence Without Losing the Craft of Coaching

This isn't a book about becoming an AI expert.

And it definitely isn't a book about letting AI coach your athletes.

It's about using the technology where it genuinely helps while keeping the judgement, relationships, experience and responsibility where they belong.

With the coach.

I'll share quite a bit from it over the coming weeks before it's released.

Including the things I think AI does brilliantly.

And the things I don't think coaches should hand over to it at all.

AI is the assistant. You are the coach.

More soon.

Unpopular opinion: most "threshold" sets aren't actually at threshold, they're either too conservative or blow up by the end. Here's the tell-tale sign 👇

Worth checking your own sets against this. Agree or disagree?
