An interesting new review of formative assessment in primary and lower-secondary education was just published with our MASH colleague Helena Vaďurová.

Abstract
Introduction: This review study systematically analyses the most cited journal articles on formative assessment (FA) in primary and lower-secondary education, with a particular focus on its definitions, components, and relevance to inclusive education (IE).

Methods: A total of 42 articles, published in English between 2005 and 2024, were selected based on their highest citation count in the Scopus database and thematic focus on FA. The selected articles were analysed using quantitative analysis and thematic content analysis.

Results: The findings reveal substantial variation in how FA is conceptualised and operationalised. While many most cited studies adopt relatively narrow definitions centred on evidence gathering and feedback, broader conceptions of FA incorporating instructional adaptation, student participation, and social-emotional learning are represented in the literature but do not predominate over narrower conceptualisations. Moreover, the most-cited FA literature largely neglects the inclusive potential of FA, with few articles explicitly engaging with the needs of diverse learners.

Conclusion: This study highlights the conceptual fragmentation within the field and calls for a more holistic and inclusive reconceptualisation of FA. The focus on highly cited literature may have limited the representation of less established or more recent perspectives in the field.

Modified Habit Reversal for Restricted and Repetitive Behaviour in Autistic Young People

Abstract
Restricted and repetitive behaviours are a main diagnostic criterion of Autism Spectrum Disorder. While many topographies of restricted and repetitive behaviour generally pose no harm and do not require intervention, some may be dangerous and require environmental adjustment to ensure the safety of the autistic person and others in the environment. Habit Reversal training is a well-established procedure to address a wide range of restrictive and repetitive habit behaviours. In this paper, three iterative studies are reported that utilised and modified Habit Reversal procedures to support three autistic children and one autistic adult. Though the implemented single-case designs lack control of threats to internal validity, the present studies provide an outline for designing rigorous replicationsto evaluated modified Habit Reversal for treating harmful restricted and repetitive behaviours among autistic individuals.

Navigating a New Era for Autism Support: What is Next for Applied Behaviour Analysis in the UK?

The Applied Behaviour Analysis Conference 2026 is a two-day hybrid conference hosted at Brunel University of London on 5–6 September 2026.

This international conference will provide an evidence-informed platform for discussion, education, and collaboration regarding Applied Behaviour Analysis for children diagnosed with autism, following the publication of the new Special Educational Needs (SEN) White Paper in the UK. The White Paper has increased national focus on early intervention, inclusive education, parental involvement, and multi-agency collaboration to improve outcomes for children with additional needs.

Parents of children diagnosed with autism often report difficulties accessing reliable information, navigating services, and understanding evidence-based interventions. There are also increasing concerns among families regarding future access to Applied Behaviour Analysis provision and whether support may become more difficult to secure through Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) processes and Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) tribunals. Parents are seeking clarity regarding their children’s rights, available evidence-based interventions, and the future landscape of autism support services.

This conference will provide space for discussion by bringing together academics, clinicians, educators, researchers, therapists, legal professionals, policy makers, and families to explore contemporary Applied Behaviour Analysis, ethical considerations, inclusion, and practical strategies to support children diagnosed with autism and their families. The conference will also support informed decision-making and empower parents to engage confidently with educational and healthcare systems.
