Travel and Tourism students rolled into summer with an exciting trip to Italy to round off the semester ☀️

They toured Burano and Murano with tour guide Phil Clark, learning all about his successful career in tourism and his inspiring business, Live Like a Local Italy.

Students were also inspired by Dr Susan Steer in Venice, who guided them around the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and introduced them to the work of the Foundation in restoring the city's important architecture and monuments.

This experience, and others like it, not only opens students up to new learning in their subject area but also helps build the confidence and life skills that employers are looking for.

Technology is evolving faster than ever – and educators need to evolve with it.

For newly qualified teacher Ian Parkhill, who is preparing to begin his first role teaching ICT and Religious Studies in a Co Down secondary school, staying ahead of digital innovation is essential. 💡

Through the Mastering the Digital Classroom Digital Skills Academy – a collaboration between Belfast Met and Stranmillis University College, funded by Bank of America as part of the Belfast Digital Skills and Employability Programme, Ian developed practical Adobe and AI skills that will help him bring technology into the classroom with confidence. 🤖🎨

Ian, a graduate of the course, said:

"Things change so quickly in technology – we can't just rely on what we've learned in our degrees. As ICT teachers, we've got to keep learning so we're ready to answer the ever-changing questions our pupils will have.

This Digital Skills Academy was a game-changer. It brought the theory from my computer science background into a practical, hands-on setting and showed just how important that will be in my work.

Making connections with industry specialists through guest lectures and events highlighted just how fast technology evolves and why it's so important for teachers to keep their finger on the pulse. It's made a massive difference as I head into my first professional post – I can't wait to get started."

The Tourism, Hospitality and Event sectors are at the heart of NI's economic growth. It has been estimated that the events industry generates £84bn every year. With continuing growth and many exciting opportunities, now is the time to get into the events sector.

Our Foundation Degree Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management with Events Specialism, validated by Ulster University combines industry knowledge with practical skills to prepare you for a career in event management.
