Week 5 with my Thursday Introduction to Floristry group.

Today was all about table arrangements, and we were lucky enough to use the beautiful dining room at HiddenHuntleyBelfast to showcase everyone’s work afterwards.

A few apples and quinces from the garden found their way onto the table too, just to add a lovely little pop of autumn colour!

We looked at proportion, balance, flower placement and sustainable techniques for creating arrangements without floral foam, while still keeping everything natural, generous and full of movement.

We were a slightly smaller group today with two students unable to attend , and they were definitely missed, but there was still plenty of flowers, chat and creativity in the studio.

One of my favourite things at this stage of the course is seeing everyone become more confident in their own decisions. We may all start with the same demonstration and materials, but the finished arrangements are always so individual — and that’s exactly how I like it.

A little thank you too to Antonia for letting us take over the dining room for the set-up and photos. It really is such a beautiful backdrop for flowers.

I can hardly believe I’ve only one week left with my Thursday group. The Tuesday group are at the same stage too, so both courses are suddenly racing towards the finish line!

The next Introduction to Floristry Course will run in April/May 2027, with booking opening later this month.

One of the loveliest parts of running my Flower School is hearing what students take away from their time here.

Beautiful flowers are always part of it, of course — but so too are confidence, creativity, new skills, encouragement, friendship and the joy of making something with your own hands. With plenty of tea, cake and coffee in the mix too!

I’m so grateful to everyone who has taken the time to leave a kind review, send a message or share their experience. It really does mean a lot.

If you’ve been wondering what it’s like to come along to Flower School, perhaps these words say it better than I can.

Halfway through already…

Both September Introduction to Floristry groups have now reached the midway point of the six-week course.

So far we’ve covered the foundations, flower care and conditioning, vase arrangements, hand-tied bouquets, wiring techniques, buttonholes and corsages — with plenty of practice, questions and lots of individual interpretation along the way.

One of the things I enjoy most at this stage is seeing everyone grow in confidence and start trusting their own eye a little more, rather than looking for the “right” answer every time.

There’s still plenty to come over the next three weeks, but it’s lovely to stop for a moment and look back at how much ground we’ve already covered.

And yes… I really do need to remember to take more photos each week !!

When autumn took over the greenhouse

One of my favourite parts of Flourish: Autumn Abundance — watching this installation grow throughout the afternoon using seasonal flowers, branches, foliage, fruit with all the wonderful colours and textures of autumn.

Created collaboratively, sustainably and very much in the spirit of letting the materials lead the way.

A little wild, a little unruly and exactly how I like it.

With thanks to some of the lovely local growers and suppliers who helped bring it all together:

Locally grown dahlias
Locally grown squashes & pumpkins
An abundance of gorgeous foliage and apples from the grounds of
Snowberries, eucalyptus & hypericum from Finlays Place
The most amazing autumn-toned hypericum grown by Hilda .nicholl
And my own home-grown amaranthus, which I’m a little bit chuffed about!

Flourish: Autumn Abundance

What a day!

A greenhouse taken over by autumn, tables filled with seasonal flowers, beautiful food, plenty of learning and laughs — and the loveliest group of people to share it all with.

From our morning tablescape to the afternoon installation, the whole day was about creating together, trying something a little bigger and bolder, and enjoying the abundance of the autumn.

Thank you to everyone who joined me, helped behind the scenes and made the day feel so special.

One I’ll remember for a very long time.

And now… recovery mode!
