THE REALITY OF PROGRESSION📈

Progress is not linear!

It is often much longer than we expect for progress to show - this can result in the ‘valley of disappointment’ where most people feel discouraged after putting in weeks or months of work without experiencing clear results.

If you can learn to push through the disappointment, keep working and be patient for the pay-off, you will realise the full value of your earlier efforts.

Start revising early- it’ll take much longer than you think to achieve the grade you want. Regular and steady practise will ALWAYS beat a stressed cramming session for a few days

🔢NUMBER SETS🔢

The natural numbers are contained within the integers, which are contained within the rationals, which are contained within the reals, which are contained within the complex numbers!

The history of these number sets is quite interesting.
Each subsequent larger set was essentially founded for a purpose!

Starting with the natural numbers, more primitive humans used this set of numbers to count objects. Which imaginably would have been an important task at the time for survival purposes for example.

Moving forward a few hundred years and the rationals were founded to solve equations like 2x = 3, which obviously has no integer value x which satisfies it.

Pythagoras then noticed that the length of the diagonal of a square with side length 1, was close to the number 1.4 and couldn’t find a rational value. Hence, real numbers were founded with his answering being the square root of 2✅

Fascinating how the simple task of inquisitive minds pursuing something interesting leads to a whole field of mathematics which has infinite applications in modern advances🤟🏽

Do you have a favourite set of numbers? Have you even heard of the largest set, the complex numbers?
Let me know if you have any questions⬇️⬇️

BATTLING THE FORGETTING CURVE🧠🧠

As we approach exam season and internal assessments, I thought I would share this tremendous graphic by showing the importance of regular testing during a revision period!

The human brain has a tendency to prioritise recent information incase of urgent recall. Think about it, you are a lot more likely to remember what you had for dinner two nights ago than two weeks ago🤔🤔

To battle this forgetting curve, we must test ourselves frequently and persistently!!

How frequently?
From experience working with a huge sample of students over the past 10 years, it will depend on your ability to recall memorised information.
I personally was always quite bad with memory games but others can remember vast amounts of information very easily. Know your abilities and limitations!🌟

🌟“AN EXTRAORDINARY PLACE”🌟

Coming to the revision & exam season, it is important to remember that the only way to learn maths is to do maths!

Spending time understanding methods and reasoning behind mathematical problems makes learning maths much more enjoyable than memorising methods🧠

Σ SIGMA NOTATION Σ

Sigma is the greek letter for S, S here stands for SUM!

That is exactly what we do when using the sigma notation, it is a compact way to denote summations of terms with a particular property (usually when an pattern is apparent) 🤟🏽

Hopefully this helps understanding of the various parts of the summation notation!
