Have you ever described a child as "busy", "full of energy" or "bouncing off the walls"?
Sometimes, what we're seeing isn't just high energy, it's a child whose nervous system is searching for regulation.
In this week's newsletter, I share a recent experience supporting a young child in an early years setting and explain how a few simple changes helped adults move from judgement to understanding.
We explore why sensory regulation isn't something children should have to earn, and how meeting sensory needs proactively can help children feel calmer, safer and more able to engage in play, learning and friendships.

After leading several children's sessions over the holidays, I found myself looking around what some might describe as a "chaotic" room. Children were bouncing, wriggling, exploring, laughing and engaging in ways that didn't fit the traditional picture of sitting still and listening.
But what I saw wasn't chaos. I saw children feeling safe enough to be themselves.
In this week's newsletter, I reflect on why we need to move away from the idea that children should all learn, play and regulate in the same way.
Because sometimes, when we let go of the "shoulds", we create space for connection, confidence and joy.

This week's newsletter is a another guest feature from Dr Kirsty Porter, Paediatric Dietitian.
Summer can be the perfect opportunity to take the pressure out of food. With more relaxed routines and extra time at home, children often have more opportunities to explore food through play and curiosity.
Kirsty shares practical, low pressure ideas to help children build confidence around food, from getting involved in food preparation and outdoor picnics to playful food activities and sensory exploration.
Because building confidence around food isn't about pressure, it's about helping children feel safe, comfortable and familiar with new experiences.
