Losing your progress in the gym and why’s it’s a good thing

13/06/2026

SAVE THIS POST… actually, for your own benefit, you should.

Because everything else you see
on your phone tries to get you to change.

Change your workout.
Change your form.

“New exercise this, optimal that…”

The beauty of the gym is its simplicity, and just how simple it can be.

The basics, done right and repeated over a longer period of time, are where 99.9% of
results are found.

That’s what you need to commit to.

Every time you swap or change something, you take a step further away from your goals.

So stick to the basics, see the simplicity in the gym, and keep pushing.

How we fixed Anna’s KAS glute bridge 👇

Over the last 6-8 weeks since returning to coaching, Anna’s progress has been incredible.

Not because we’ve completely reinvented her training.

But because we’ve focused on improving the small things that make a big difference:
✅ Better positioning
✅ Better movement quality
✅ Better ex*****on
✅ Better intent behind every rep

The result?

A stronger, more controlled KAS glute bridge and this week she hit her goal of 105kg for 6 reps.

Proof that progress isn’t always about doing more.

Sometimes it’s about doing the basics better and having someone identify exactly what needs improving.

Stop wasting your time in the gym, if you want more information about 1-1 coaching

Message me “coaching” and I’ll send across the details.

Fat loss coaches are w**k

Coaching fat loss is easy

The real challenge is what happens afterwards.

Can you maintain your results?
Can you increase calories without panicking?
Can you build muscle after years of dieting?

Can you navigate holidays, meals out and social events without undoing your progress?

This is where most people get stuck. Not because they lack motivation, but because they’ve never been taught what comes next.

If your coach’s entire skillset starts and ends with putting you into a calorie deficit, you’re not paying for coaching.

You’re paying for a glorified calorie calculator.

Nothing better than when you finish your 8 weeks of fat loss and your fat loss coach looks at you and says “so let’s lose some more weight then”

When in reality, they say that because they can’t coach anything else.

Real coaching is helping you navigate every phase of the journey, not just the fat loss phase.

One of the biggest mistakes people make in fitness is judging progress by a single metric.

For Alice, that used to be the scales.

But over the last few years, her journey has shown how quickly that focus can change when life stops being straightforward.

Because during that time, she wasn’t just “trying to lose weight.”

She was dealing with Endometriosis.

What stands out most about Alice’s journey isn’t that she did it perfectly.

It’s that she kept going.

There were weeks where training had to look different.
There were periods where just showing up was the win.
There were moments where progress wasn’t visible at all from the outside.

But over time, something shifted.

Her relationship with training changed.
Her confidence started to build.

And the gym went from something she felt she “had to do” for weight loss, to something she genuinely enjoys and relies on for her mental health.

And maybe the most important change of all is this:

“I’m slowly learning not to hate my body.”

That didn’t come from everything being easy.

Because there nothing easy when your working against a body you no longer trust.

It came from continuing to train and stay engaged through everything that wasn’t.

Alice’s journey is a reminder that progress isn’t always straight foward, linear, or predictable.

Sometimes it’s simply learning how to keep going when life makes it difficult to do so.
And that version of progress matters just as much as anything you can measure.

A massive well done to Alice for everything she’s achieved including losing 30lbs alongside everything she’s been dealing with.

That level of consistency and resilience through Endometriosis, pain and huge life changes says everything about her.

If you’re reading this and feel like your own journey isn’t “perfect enough” to make progress, it might be worth rethinking what progress actually looks like.

A lot of people aren’t struggling with the scale itself.

They’re struggling with what they believe the scale says about them.

Old identities can follow us into adult life if we never challenge them.

But your current actions matter more than the labels you were given years ago.

Progress is not perfection.

It’s continuing to show up without turning one bad moment into your identity.

Things my clients say that make me want to scream pt.2 “the number on the scale jumped up 1lb from yesterday, I think I need to add in some more cardio”

It’s the equivalent of spending £10 on your dinner, looking at your bank balance drop and then thinking you need a whole new full time job.

It’s not that deep and stick to the basics.

Training recently, with the football seasoned being finished the aim now is to make sure my training helps me get ready and get through hopefully another 30+ game season injury free.

Weight isn’t about doing more it’s about finding what is repeatable. Turns out that 1400 calorie, 2x 5K runs 4 gym sessions and 6am starts isn’t that sustainable….
