Being in shape long term really isn’t that difficult❌

Now don’t get me wrong. Getting in shape to begin with can be pretty strenuous for a lot of people. But once you get there, there is really no reason to be out of shape again.

Think of it as riding a bike… Once you learn you never forget. Once you have learned to skills and how to execute your plans, it would take a complete crisis to end up going back the way. You dont need to count calories, you dont need to be smashing the gym and doing your steps to the T. You just need to do enough to not go backwards. Which, truth be told, is a lot less than people realise.

The knowledge you gain from getting in shape allows you to live in both realities. But for some reason a lot of people go from one to another. An endless loop of gym goer to couch potato. Keep a toe or two in the game and you will never have to “Get in shape” ever again.

Sometimes we don’t train for anything…

Now I am a big preacher of having something in the books to hold yourself accountable for. It does tend to make you work harder knowing you have to perform or be ready for a certain day.

But I also think you can get lost in this mindset.

Your training should be fun (to you). A way to blow off steam. A way of making the rest of your life more enjoyable.

For the most part, I train because I enjoy training. Some days you just go through the motions. Some days its about catching up with friends. Some days its just about getting out the house.

A great personal example for me. I diet (for the most part) to give myself that room to indulge in things that most people have a bad view of. Cakes, sweet treats, large quantities of food.

My training is fun and it also allows me to have fun outside of the gym without feeling guilty. This is probably more relevant to 99% of you than it would be me saying you need to train for a competition.

Make your goals relevant to you. Whatever they are🤛

It was never about the competition…

Very few feelings compare to watching someone close to you step up to the mark, and that’s exactly what has happened today.

I do this all the time. It’s normal to me. Not daunting. Not scary. Just part of my life. Not everyone can say that, and I’m genuinely grateful to have shared this experience with one of my friends.

But it was never about the competition. It was about everything that came before it.

Adam probably never realised it at the time, but I genuinely didn’t care what happened on the day. Win, lose, finish first or finish last. It was irrelevant. What mattered was the effort he put in during the months leading up to it.

I’ve lost count of the number of people who have spoken highly of you to me over the last few months. Not because of what you might achieve today, but because of the work you were putting in when nobody was watching.

This was about discipline. Hard work. Consistency. Turning up when it would have been easier not to. The things that separate people who talk about doing something from those who actually do it.

I’m incredibly proud of you mate.

Today was just the reward for everything you’ve done to get here.

Well done for stepping up. This is what the game is really all about.

Comp week protocol for myself and Adam❌

Train today and tomorrow then rest like our lives depend on it for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. With the small exception of a mess around before we have a scheduled cheat meal Thursday evening.

This might sound a bit mad to a couple of you. Not training? Going off your diet plan?

Yes. Comp week is about preparing your body for the competition. Not trying to break records or do any sort of hard graft.

If your plan was executed properly you should have had your last hard session by now. You should be tired, sore and verging on the edge of over trained. The week leading into the comp is about relaxing and letting the body heal so it is at its best for the competition.

And in terms of going off plan with the cheat meal. Not essential but again, another great way to relax and get ready for the competition.

De-stress, fuel up and recover ready for the big day. That is the planđź’Ş

Don’t let your big, long term goals devalue your short term goals❌

Found myself stepping on the scales this morning only to be a little disappointed with what I saw. I had a number in my head and it didn’t happen.

The crazy thing is… I still hit a new low. I still made good progress. And I think a lot of people fall into this way of thinking.

Things are going stupidly well and we start thinking about getting stretch target results. Only to be knocked back down to reality when it doesn’t work out like that. But progress is progress and I see it with myself and clients. Being disappointed because it wasn’t as good as you wanted.

We get ahead of ourselves, chasing more and more and we forget to take a minute just to appreciate what we have achieved, even if it wasn’t quite what you had in mind.

I still made progress, good progress at that, but it wasn’t good enough, so I was annoyed. Very silly way of thinking and sounds daft even just saying that.

Always plan time to take a step back and look at things rationally. Progress is always goodđź’Ş
