Year 4 brought their Invaders and Settlers topic to life yesterday with an exciting trip to Verulamium Museum in St Albans.

From dressing up and taking part in a Roman market experience to exploring artefacts, mosaics, games and evidence of daily life in Roman Britain, our students loved stepping back in time and experiencing history first-hand. A visit to the impressive hypocaust gave them a fascinating insight into the Romans' ingenious underfloor heating system.

The trip sparked curiosity, encouraged independence and made their learning truly memorable. We were particularly proud to hear that museum staff praised our students for being such a pleasure to have on site. Well done, Year 4!

We are delighted to congratulate Ellie in Year 6 on her selection for the National Children's Orchestra, a fantastic achievement and a testament to her dedication, talent and hard work.

Following in the footsteps of her older sister Annabel, Ellie secured her place after submitting an audition recording and being selected from a highly competitive field of applicants from across the country. Her success reflects the countless hours she has devoted to practising the flute, as well as the dedicated support and tuition she receives from Mrs Watts here at school.

The National Children's Orchestra provides exceptional musical opportunities for young musicians, and we are incredibly proud of Ellie’s accomplishment. We look forward to following her musical journey and wish her every success in this exciting next chapter.

We were delighted to begin the term with a fantastic fundraising opportunity as our Junior School Charities Club hosted a Fun Run in support of The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organisation dedicated to removing plastic from the world's oceans.

It was wonderful to see so many students taking part, with plenty of creativity on display in the costumes worn throughout the event. Full of energy, enthusiasm and fun, the day was a fantastic example of our commitment to service, encouraging students to make a positive difference while supporting an important global cause.

Our Year 3 rugby players made an outstanding start to the season, embracing their first away fixtures with confidence, energy and determination.

Competing across a series of matches, the boys represented BMS brilliantly, showcasing the teamwork, resilience and sporting spirit that underpin our rugby programme from an early age. The afternoon provided valuable competitive experience, with every player stepping up to the challenge and continuing to develop their skills in a match environment.

Last week, our Junior School students took part in their first House Competition of the year, tackling a series of exciting team-building challenges designed to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.

From navigating the 'human knot' and creating an aerial display, to completing silent challenges and crossing a 'hot lava' zone, students worked together brilliantly throughout. It was fantastic to see children from all year groups supporting one another, and especially pleasing to see our newest students settle in so confidently, making friends and integrating seamlessly into school life. They've been developing their coordination using balloons and agility ladders, while also taking on the challenge of becoming excellent coaches for their partners. The encouragement and positivity they've shown towards one another has been fantastic to see.

There was a wonderful atmosphere at the Year 6 Celebration Afternoon at the end of term, as students came together to reflect on their time in the Junior School and celebrate their many achievements.

The event provided an opportunity to look back on a memorable year, with highlights including learning about the Victorians, Cultures Week, the brilliant production of Annie Jr, and enjoying a range of exciting trips and visits.

Following the celebrations and presentation of awards, students were joined by friends and family for a picnic on the lawn outside the Christopher Fry Hall, making the most of the glorious sunshine.

A fitting way to mark the end of an important chapter, the afternoon was filled with happy memories, gratitude and excitement for the next stage of their Bedford Modern School journey.

On the penultimate day of term, the Junior School came together for its much-anticipated annual Charities Morning, raising funds while having plenty of fun along the way.

Students showed fantastic initiative and teamwork, organising, creating and running a wide variety of stalls and games for their peers to enjoy. From penalty shootout challenges and lucky dips, to bean bag throwing and much more, there was something for everyone. A particular highlight was the good-natured sponge throwing stall, which proved especially refreshing during the heatwave!

The event was a wonderful showcase of our students’ creativity, enthusiasm and generosity, with everyone coming together in support of a great cause. Well done to all involved for making it such a memorable and successful morning.

It's always fun to end the term on a high, and our squash players did just that with a special coaching session for some of our teachers!

Swapping roles for the afternoon, students took to the courts to teach the fundamentals of squash, sharing their skills, techniques and enthusiasm with a group of eager beginners. The session was followed by a series of fun-filled and energetically competitive matches, with plenty of rallies, laughter and impressive shot-making on display.

It was fantastic to see just how much our students have progressed over the year, not only in their playing ability but also in their confidence and communication skills. They proved to be excellent coaches, showing patience, encouragement and expertise as they introduced their teachers to the sport.
