π§ π Neurodivergent Burnout is REAL. ππ§
Too often, neurodivergent burnout is misunderstood as laziness, awkwardness, being antisocial, or simply βnot coping well enough.β
It isnβt.
Neurodivergent burnout is a very real physical and emotional state of exhaustion that is often caused by prolonged masking, sensory overload, and constantly trying to function in environments that donβt naturally meet a personβs needs.
π Too much noise.
π‘ Too much light.
π₯ Too many people.
π£οΈToo much complicated communication.
𧩠Too much time spent regulating, adapting, and enduring.
Many neurodivergent individuals become incredibly skilled at managing these challenges, but eventually the cost catches up with them.
Burnout can last hours, days, or even weeks.
Common signs include:
πΉ Wanting complete isolation
πΉ Needing reduced sensory input
πΉ Feeling physically exhausted and emotionally anxious
πΉ Struggling with tasks that normally feel manageable
At Progressive Strides, we often see students arrive having spent years using the same coping strategies that led to burnout in mainstream settings. They continue to mask, stay quiet about their needs, push through discomfort, and endure situations that are overwhelming rather than asking for support.
π± One of the most important things we teach is how to understand and manage their own neurodivergence.
We help students learn:
π¬ How to communicate their needs
π₯ How to stagger social interaction
π§ How to manage sensory input before it becomes overwhelming
π οΈ How to regulate in the moment instead of waiting until they are completely burnt out
Every studentβs journey is different, but a huge part of the process is helping them move away from hiding their neurodivergence and towards understanding it, accepting it, and developing practical strategies that genuinely work.
Because the goal isnβt to simply survive the day.
β¨ Itβs to thrive without burning out.β¨

π Due to the current government heatwave warning, we have made the decision to cancel all student sessions this week.
π₯΅ Because our programmes are practical and require students to be active outdoors, the forecast temperatures of over 34 degrees make it unsafe to run our usual sessions for both students and our horses.
Our top priority is preventing anyone from being uncomfortable or becoming unwell with heat exhaustion. Furthermore, as our indoor facilities lack air conditioning, keeping students inside with fans is not a safe or suitable alternative.
We are sorry that we have to make this change to the programme and look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday, June 29th, when hopefully the weather is a more manageable for all.
β€οΈ Thank you for your understanding and continued support. Stay safe and keep cool!
Best regards,
The Progressive Strides Team

β€οΈ As World Wellbeing Week begins, we are reminded that wellbeing is not an add-on to education β it is the foundation that learning is built upon.
π€ Many of our young people have faced challenges that are not always visible. Before progress can happen, they need to feel safe, understood and valued.
π π At Progressive Strides, we celebrate every step forward, whether thatβs attending, engaging, building confidence, developing friendships or simply having a good day.
Wellbeing matters. Relationships matter. Every young person matters.

π At Progressive Strides parents are a corner stone of everything we do. π
When supporting young people with SEND and SEMH needs, we know that nobody knows your child better than you.
π‘ You see the reality behind closed doors.
π You understand their strengths, challenges and potential.
π― You know what life skills, next steps and areas for development matter most.
We also know that many parents are constantly fighting for the support their child needs. We know the meetings, paperwork, phone calls and battles can be exhausting. We know that many of you are tired, but you keep showing up for your children every single day.
At Progressive Strides, many of our staff are parents/family members to young people with SEND or SEMH needs. We understand first-hand the challenges, frustrations and victories that come with navigating the SEND system because many of us have lived it too.
π€ We listen to your ideas.
π We value your insights.
π‘ We recognise that you are the expert on your child.
β€οΈ We respect your lived experience.
Too often, parents can feel like they are the last to know or that their views come second to professionals and external agencies. We believe your voice should be heard, valued and respected.
Because when families and professionals work together, young people have the best chance to thrive. π

π Understanding our Progressive Strides Bespoke Programme π
β
1:1 support (or occasionally 2:1)
π‘ Ideal for students who:
πΉ Arenβt yet ready to learn comfortably in a group setting
πΉ Need support with confidence, communication and social skills
πΉ Are working towards EHCP outcomes or family goals
πΉ Have highly individual targets that canβt easily be developed in a group
π Three progressive levels:
π± Beginner
β Level 1
π Level 2
βοΈ Skills are ticked off and dated as they are achieved
βοΈ Progress is recorded every step of the way
βοΈ Students can work through the programme at their own pace
β‘οΈ Many students begin on a bespoke programme before progressing into group sessions.
β€οΈ However, some students continue to thrive on a 1:1 basisβand thatβs absolutely fine too. We meet students where they are, recognising that everyone learns differently and that some learners achieve their best outcomes in an individual environment.
π― The right support, at the right level, at the right time.

πΎπ MEET THE DOG: MILLIE ππΎ
Forget Meet the Staff or horsesβ¦ itβs time to meet the REAL boss of Progressive Strides! π
Millie is our golden oldie retriever, professional crumb inspector π½οΈ, carrot enthusiast π₯, and self-appointed Queen of the Kingdom π.
Every morning starts with a loud WOOF until her carrot arrives. Being a little deaf these days means she has absolutely no idea how much noise sheβs making! π’π
Students absolutely adore her, and she loves being the centre of attention. Whether sheβs helping someone feel calm, collecting cuddles, or checking for dropped lunch, Millie is always on duty. β€οΈ
Opinionated? Very.
Vocal? Extremely.
In charge? She certainly thinks so! πΆπ

π΄π Real-Life Learning in Action! ππ΄
Our students have been getting hands-on experience and developing real vocational skills as part of their Horse Care diplomas (Levels 1 & 2) with Haddon Training Limited π΄
This week, we were delighted to welcome Isabel Harker from Spillers, who visited to weigh our horses using a weighbridge and carry out body condition scoring. βοΈπ
Isabel was incredibly patient and supportive, allowing the students to lead the horses onto the weighbridge themselves and talking them through every step of the process. She also explained how body condition scoring works, including checking areas such as the neck and other key fat-storage points. ππ
Our students rose to the challenge brilliantly! πͺ They worked together as a team, stayed organised, handled the horses confidently, and successfully weighed every horse. π΄β
Experiences like this are what vocational learning is all about β gaining practical skills, building confidence, and learning directly from industry professionals. π±β¨

π Happy Pride Month! π
At Progressive Strides, we celebrate individuality, respect and being yourself. π
Who you love, how you identify, or what makes you uniquely you is only one part of your story. What matters most is being kind, respectful, honest and supportive of others. π€β¨
This Pride Month, letβs celebrate diversity, encourage acceptance and continue building a community where everyone feels they belong. ππ
