❓ Could maths feel more exciting when children can see, touch and play with the numbers?

🧩 Fractions can sometimes feel tricky, especially when children are expected to work with abstract numbers on a page. Using colourful, hands-on resources can make concepts such as equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions much easier to explore.

🎨 In this activity, practical resources, visual cards and manipulatives were used to help make fractions more meaningful and engaging. Children can physically see how parts relate to a whole before moving towards written calculations.

💡 This kind of approach can be particularly helpful for children who benefit from a more visual, multisensory or hands-on way of learning, including children with dyscalculia, ADHD or low confidence in maths.

Throughout October, we’re celebrating the many different ways children and young people can learn outside of traditional school settings.

We’ll be sharing blog posts, ideas and useful information for families who are home educating, covering different aspects of learning and the ways additional support can fit into a home education approach.

The answer isn't necessarily.

Some families are perfectly happy providing all of their child's education themselves, while others choose to bring in additional support for particular subjects or stages of learning.

A tutor might be useful if:

📝 They're preparing for GCSEs or another qualification
💻 A family would like some subject-specific online tuition
🧩 A child would benefit from another teaching approach or explanation

🌅 Do you love helping your child bring a landscape or character to life through descriptive writing?

📚 In our online English sessions, we explore how to use carefully chosen words to create vivid pictures in the reader’s mind. Children learn how to describe settings, characters, atmosphere and emotions in a way that makes their writing more engaging.

✏️ We might explore a mysterious forest, a stormy beach, a busy city or an unusual character, then look at how adjectives, powerful verbs, sensory details and figurative language can make the description come alive.

💡 Descriptive writing is also a great way to build vocabulary, creativity and confidence. Children are encouraged to develop their own ideas rather than simply copying examples.
