Activity/Tip
For *World Mental Health Day* our focus, here at *Empowering Children and Families (ECAF)* is on family mental health. Below is an activity we use in our Family First Aid for Mental Health course. We also use variations of it in our Parenting, Family Relationship and Conflict Resolution courses.
*Family Values*
What is a value?
A value is the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. It is also a person's principles or standards of behaviour.
*What are family values?*
These are the important principles, standards and behaviours held, learned or reinforced within a family.
An example of a positive family value is compassion.
An example of a negative family value is manipulation
*Activity*
Write the top 5 family values, you believe you share with your spouse and have taught your children. Ask your children and spouse to write their top 5. See if you agree with each other. If you don't agree, you should have an honest discussion and set family values together. Remember, it is never too late to set family values, even if adult children are involved or if siblings are adults.
*Why is this important?*
Working with common values help to lessen conflicts and offer healthy resolutions, which promotes mental health. Constant conflicts and unhealthy resolutions, contribute to mental health conditions such as Stress, Anxiety and Depression.
If you are struggling with this, you can get professional help. For more information or to book a course or 1 hour workshop email [email protected]. Ask us about our discounts and use code WMHD2022.
