Yet another cabinet minister, Ms Truss, wants to improve Literacy and Numeracy! How are you going to do this, Ms Truss: please give us a clue? It seems that previous governments have failed, but why? I believe there needs to be more Specialist Teachers, like myself, and TAs, who can spot when a child is struggling, understand WHY they are struggling and have the skills to help them. There also needs to be an overhaul of the PGCE to include far more teaching about SEND, SpLDs and Visual Disturbance. Personally, I get so fed up and frustrated by ministers saying they want to improve Literacy and Numeracy just to get a vote! Employ the correct staff to do the job, and more of them. Let's see what happens!

The best advice I can give to anyone new to teaching and supporting children and adults with learning difficulties and differences is to LISTEN to them, and talk to them about what they are experiencing when trying to learn. Even with over 20 years experience of working with students with a wide range of barriers to learning, I have always listened to them. I remember a teenager at college telling his tutor that I was the first person EVER to listen to him and what he found difficult; that's quite sad, and especially so when he's gone through years of education. Learning from children and adults is crucial to helping them cope with the challenges they face in school/college and university. I'm still learning, even after 20+ years in education, and I love helping children and adults find the best way that they like to learn! 😃

What is more important: reading or spelling? My view is that reading is far more important than spelling. Why? If a child cannot read, they cannot access the curriculum, or become independent readers, or search information on a computer, although we do have the speech facility now to speak to computers! When I worked at a school for autistic children, I had a small group of children who also had specific learning difficulties/differences. I used a range of methods to help a couple of children become independent readers within 2 years (actually 18 months), which equates to age 16+. When the two children started in my class they were aged 11, and their reading ability ages were just under 9 years (if my memory serves me correctly), and of course they were struggling in class and had fairly low confidence when reading. I saw these children every day for literacy, numeracy and science. Fast forward 18 months - they were engaged in reading, enjoyed reading, looked information up on their phones or the computer: amazing, and they were much happier in themselves. How did this happen? Using Toe by Toe every day, in addition to multisensory methods and interesting activities. Message me if you'd like to find out more... thank you! 😃

Have you ever heard of aphantasia? Aphantasia is the inability or severely limited ability to create a mental picture in your head. I have come across this, more recently, in my teaching because I am aware of the condition. When I take on a new client/student, I now ask if they have the ability to visualise a spelling or scene, because it is very important as part of the learning process to be able to visualise. Imagine, if you can, not having the ability to visualise. If you're a teacher, or support in class, how can you help a struggling student? Provide visual prompts to help with writing and spelling, as well as writing frames if they cannot hold on to a string of information. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this, or other matters relating to dyslexia or SEND. Also, view my website to find information about Specific Learning Difficulties and differences.
