Montessori- Creativity within Real Life

There's a common misconception where people think Montessori doesn't allow for creativity. The truth will surprise you and make you reevaluate the way you look at imagination in your own life.

Every Flower is a soul blossoming in nature...⁣ Read my tips to encourage your children (and you) to spend time outdoor ⁣

It is so much easier to spend time outside when the weather is nice! ⁣⁣
I love the beginning of every Season. Spring is even a more wonderful time with spring flowers, birds singing and blossoms all around.⁣
⁣But I still have to force myself to go out. And now that my children are older, I have noticed that going out is not as natural in our daily/weekly rhythm.⁣

So how to help your older children to enjoy outdoor time? (those ideas can be suitable for younger children too)⁣

- choose after-school activities that are done outdoor such as forest school, football and other sports⁣
- have a goal in mind as random exploratory walks are less interesting for children in the second plane (6+ but probably true from 4 years old)⁣
- the goal could be a nature hunt or take your camera and encourage them to take pictures⁣
- check the cards for 2 amazing games to play in nature⁣
- organise the playdate in nature as older children are definitely social⁣
- go out straight after school without coming back home, so have a picnic or snack ready to enjoy in the park⁣
- walk or cycle back from school⁣
- go litter picker. Since we have 2 litter picker tools, my children enjoy our daily walk more⁣
- choose a new outdoor space to explore for the weekend. We crave novelty!⁣
- Offer them their own vegetable plot and make them responsible for the project from a to z. Let them choose their seeds and taking care of the plot by themselves. Same for a flower patch. ⁣
- offer them outdoor practical life activities such as cleaning the car.⁣
- follow a nature curriculum for inspiration⁣

Montessori encourages children to develop independence skills. We encourage you to promote self-direct learning based on interest, to try step-by-step practical life activities to develop functional independence, to follow your child’s lead when they want to do it themselves.

But independence is a process.

And often, when they have mastered a skill, they are not interested anymore to perform it until they reach the second stage in their development and know the end goal of that skill: For example, they will learn to pour from one jug to a glass to drink from it, they will lose interest until they want to bake something that requires that pouring skill. They will learn to do laces and not want to tie their shoes until they need the skill to tie their football shoes during a game (true story with my son).

Also, when they ask you to help, it might be because they want to connect with you and want you to show them that you care for them. Like you want your partner to pour you a nice cup of tea (that you are well able to do yourself).

Enjoy being called “Mama!”

Montessori on a budget: some tips ⤵️
I think I will make it a series because there are many ways to approach this.
But to start with, some items are actually better bought second hand! I never fail to find practical life items in the local charity shop:
- with jugs: offer a pouring activity then use the jug for real at the table
- tiny flower vase for flower arranging: pick up some flowers from the garden, pour water in the case with a small jug and voila! You will probably find some cute doily in charity shops as well.
- box of shells for sensory activities: take a picture of each that you print then it is a matching game. Hide them in a bag and recognise by touch only. Or polish them with a damp cloth.
- small basket to display materials
- 2 cute identical containers for a transferring by hand activity.

Do you like this reel? I visit my local second hand shops often as there are next to the post office so I can show you what I would buy and what I would do every week! Comment to let me know!

How much “Montessori” do you do at home?
Is Montessori only the activities on a tray? The practical life? The Montessori “materials”?

Montessori is a way of life and your child needs more than some specific branded Materials.

Montessori activities on a tray are probably the less your child does over the day. Maybe, you focus more “naturally” on everyday life like cooking, cleaning, helping around, and learning skills that promote independence!
Maybe your child is in a sensitive period to language and all day long, you talk and read books.
Or your child goes to a Montessori preschool so when he comes back home, he wants to play with his “flashy” toys or build stuff with his siblings.

Montessori is so much more than what we think is “Montessori”.
The way you respect your child, the way you observe your child, what you offer to your child is not limited to the shelf, to the branded materials, to the 3 parts cards. You can have 100% of that or none of that. You can have some fantasy, some plastic, some “I will never have that in my classroom but at home, why not” and you would still “do Montessori at home”.

Swipe left for “what is also Montessori” ;-)
