The first lunchtime concert of the academic year provided a wonderful showcase of the talent and enthusiasm of our BMS musicians. Students and staff enjoyed a varied programme featuring solo performances on bassoon, guitar, piano and drum kit, a flute duet, and even an ensemble performance inspired by the characters of Beatrix Potter, complete with spoken introductions bringing each piece to life.

Our lunchtime concerts are a valued part of the School’s musical calendar, offering students the opportunity to develop their confidence and performance skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Congratulations to all of our performers on an excellent start to the year’s concert series.

BMS was proud to be at the heart of a fantastic day of rugby at this year's Bedford Junior Blues Festival.

We were delighted to host around 50 teams, more than 700 young players and almost 3,000 visitors at the School for a fantastic celebration of rugby, teamwork and fun in the sunshine.

As proud sponsors of the festival, our long-standing partnership with Bedford Junior Blues continues to provide opportunities for young people across the region to come together through sport. It was wonderful to see the BMS fields filled with players, families and supporters, bringing the wider community into the School and creating such a energetic atmosphere throughout the day.

The Bedford Junior Blues Rugby Festival remains a highlight of the junior rugby calendar, and we are incredibly proud to play our part in an event that showcases the very best of grassroots rugby and community spirit.

This afternoon, the BMS English Department had the privilege of welcoming two guest speakers who shared their personal experiences as members of the Windrush generation.

Organised to support our Year 12 students’ study of The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvon, the session brought the novel’s historical context to life through powerful first-hand accounts of migration from the Caribbean to the UK. Students engaged in thoughtful discussion, asked insightful questions and gained a deeper understanding of the themes explored in the text.

We are incredibly grateful to our guest speakers for sharing their stories and enriching our students’ learning, and to the English Department for organising such a valuable and memorable experience.

Our Year 13 A Level Biology students recently stepped beyond the classroom and into the field, spending a day at the beautiful and diverse habitat of Ickwell to put their ecological knowledge and practical skills into action.

Working in groups, students investigated species diversity and distribution, using a range of ecological sampling techniques to collect and analyse data. They explored how environmental factors influence the abundance and distribution of organisms, developing their skills in scientific investigation, quantitative data collection and evidence-based analysis.

The fieldwork provided valuable preparation for the A Level Biology Practical Endorsement, while also giving students the opportunity to experience first-hand how the concepts they study apply to the natural world. Set against the stunning backdrop of Ickwell, the day combined rigorous scientific enquiry with time outdoors, making for an engaging, memorable and highly rewarding learning experience.

For the first time in over 20 years, Bedford Modern School and Bedford School met for a National Schools cup match. With a fantastic turnout from both school communities, the atmosphere was electric and the occasion felt like a real celebration of rugby and school spirit.

It was wonderful to see not only fierce competition on the pitch, but also tremendous camaraderie between the two schools.

We are incredibly proud of our players for representing BMS with pride, grit and outstanding sportsmanship, and equally grateful to the many supporters who came along to cheer on their peers so enthusiastically. Thank you to Bedford School for a great match on what was a fantastic occasion for both schools, and congratulations on the win!

Our thriving Board Games Club continues to be a firm favourite with students across all year groups. From chess and card games to Dungeons & Dragons, jigsaw puzzles and much more, the club runs as a drop-in every lunchtime and offers something for everyone.

Providing a structured yet low-pressure environment, Board Games Club helps students build confidence, strengthen social communication skills, and develop lasting friendships. Most importantly, it’s a place where students can relax, have fun, and enjoy spending time together as part of the BMS community.

Year 7 ACE (Academic Challenge & Enrichment) Day returned today with students enjoying a vibrant off-timetable programme, this year centred on music and performance as well as the usual problem solving and teamwork.

From an engaging challenge workshop to music technology, musical theatre and practical performance sessions with instruments they had never played before, students embraced new experiences and stepped outside their comfort zones. Some of our Sixth Form students also joined in with a session introducing students to a fascinating range of 'endangered instruments', inspiring curiosity and creativity.

The day provided the entire year group with valuable opportunities to collaborate, build confidence, develop problem-solving skills and discover new talents, all while having great fun together.

We are delighted to celebrate another exceptional year of LAMDA results, with a 100% pass rate and 99% of students achieving Distinctions or Merits. Our Junior School students achieved an incredible 100% Distinction and Merit rate, while our Grade 8 candidates secured an outstanding 100% Distinction rate.

This week, at our EPQ Presentation Fair, our Year 13 students showcased the impressive results of months of independent research, analysis and academic enquiry.

With a large number of students choosing to undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) each year, it has become a hallmark of academic ambition at Bedford Modern School. Renowned for its long-standing record of success, the qualification provides students with the opportunity to explore subjects beyond the curriculum, developing the research, critical thinking and communication skills that prepare them exceptionally well for university and beyond.

Staff and students enjoyed visiting the fair across two days, where they could discuss a fascinating range of projects with the presenters. The confidence, intellectual curiosity and depth of knowledge on display were a testament to the high standards of academic scholarship that continue to thrive at BMS.

We were delighted to welcome back OBM Becca Scott (2018-2024) yesterday to speak with our Year 7 students about her experiences as a para-athlete and living with a disability.

During her time at BMS, Becca excelled across a range of sports, representing the School in Netball, Hockey, Athletics and Cricket, while also competing at an elite level as a 100m sprinter and long jumper within the Paralympic Development Academy.

Now studying Human Biology at Loughborough University and training full-time in athletics, Becca has already achieved silver at the UK Indoor Women's Para Athletics Championships and bronze at the UK Athletics Championships 2025, with her sights firmly set on representing Team GB at the LA 2028 Paralympics.

Our Year 7 students were fully engaged throughout the session, asking thoughtful questions and even sharing some of their own experiences. Thank you, Becca, for delivering such an inspiring and impactful talk.
