Celebrating Black History Month: Winifred Atwell 🎶🎹

As October begins, so does Black History Month, and our Dragonflies have started the month by discovering the achievements of the incredible Winifred Atwell. ❤️

The children learnt about Winifred and her love of the piano before listening carefully to some of her music. Inspired by what they heard, it was then their turn to become musicians! 🎵

Using keyboards, shakers, tambourines and other instruments, the children experimented with creating their own music, listening for different sounds, rhythms and melodies along the way.

Throughout October, we will continue introducing the children to inspiring Black figures and their achievements through stories, music, art and lots of hands-on experiences. ✨

🍁🎨 Autumn Leaf Printing! 🎨🍂

Our Butterflies have been getting creative with a little autumn-inspired painting!

Using real leaves and lots of colourful paint, the children explored dipping, pressing and printing, lifting each leaf to discover the different shapes, patterns and marks left behind. 🍁

We introduced different colour names as the children experimented, mixing paints together and watching new colours appear. They also explored the leaves themselves, feeling their different textures and noticing their shapes and sizes. Lots of colourful, messy exploring for our little Butterflies! 🎨🍂

🎨✨ Chalk Creations in Bumblebees! ✨🎨

Our Bumblebees have been getting creative with colourful chalk and stencils!

The children chose their favourite stencils before carefully tracing and filling them with different colours, experimenting with shapes, patterns and their own ideas along the way. 🌈

They then took their creativity to a much bigger scale by drawing around each other! Taking turns to lie down and create life-sized outlines encouraged plenty of teamwork, communication and cooperation between friends.

Alongside all the creativity, drawing and tracing are brilliant for strengthening little hands, developing hand-eye coordination and building the early mark-making skills that will eventually support writing. ✏️💛

Little Scientists: Spin Art Planets! 🎨🌎

Dragonflies combined science and creativity during their Little Scientists session, using a salad spinner to create their very own colourful planets!

The children added drops of paint to their paper before spinning the salad spinner as fast as they could. When they lifted the lid, they discovered a completely different pattern each time as the paint had spread across the paper. 🌀🎨

As they experimented, we talked about how the spinning motion was making the paint move outwards and encouraged the children to notice what changed when they spun it faster or slower.

It was a super fun way to explore movement, speed and cause and effect, while creating some pretty spectacular planets along the way! 👩‍🔬🪐

Our Butterfly Life Cycle Programme Continues! 🐛🦋

There’s been another exciting development in our Butterfly Life Cycle Programme as our Bumblebees took a close look at our caterpillars and discovered they’re getting ready for the next stage of their transformation!

The children carefully observed the changes they could see before sharing a story about butterflies and revisiting the different stages of their life cycle. 🌱

We then thought about which stage our caterpillars had reached and took a little peek at what will happen next, helping the children connect what they’ve been learning with the real-life transformation happening right in front of them. 🔎

Now we wait for the most exciting part... our butterflies! 🦋

Nature Nurture: Investigating Seeds! 🔎🌱

Dragonflies became nature investigators during their Nature Nurture session, taking a closer look at something tiny that has the potential to grow into an entire plant... a seed!

The children examined different seeds closely, comparing what they could see before passing them carefully around the group. When they noticed that some had disappeared along the way, it sparked a brilliant discussion about seed dispersal and the different ways seeds can travel and spread in nature. 🌿

We then explored the life cycle of a plant, with the children making their own connections to their recent learning about the butterfly life cycle and noticing how living things grow and change over time. 🦋

Our Nature Nurture sessions give children the opportunity to explore the natural world in greater depth, encouraging them to investigate, ask questions, make connections and discover the science happening all around them. 🌱💛

🧣🌈 Scarf Den Adventures! 🌈🧣

Our babies had the best time exploring their colourful scarf den!

The children crawled in and out, hid beneath the scarves and loved feeling the soft fabric tickle their faces as they moved through. We introduced different colour names and played peekaboo as the children explored, encouraging early communication and interaction. 💛

Crawling and navigating their way through the den also gave those little bodies a workout, helping to develop coordination, balance and spatial awareness, while the different colours and textures provided plenty of sensory exploration! 🦋✨

Huge Congratulations, Nikola! 🎓🎉

We are so incredibly proud to share that Nikola has successfully completed her Level 3 qualification and is now a fully qualified Early Years Educator! ✨

To make this achievement even more special, Nikola was awarded an overall Merit – a fantastic reflection of all of her hard work, dedication and commitment throughout her studies. We couldn’t be prouder of everything she has achieved!

🦋🌱 Our Butterfly Life Cycle Programme Has Begun! 🌱🦋

We have started one of our favourite programmes of the year, following the incredible life cycle of a butterfly from beginning to end!

We currently have our very own caterpillars at nursery, giving the children the opportunity to observe real changes as they grow. Over the coming weeks, they’ll follow their journey from caterpillar to chrysalis and eventually butterfly, before watching them be released. 🔎🦋

The children have already been busy observing our caterpillars and thinking about why they’ve grown bigger. They quickly worked out that they had been eating lots of food and made the perfect connection to one of their favourite stories, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’! 📚

We used the story to bring in some Magic Maths too, noticing that the caterpillar eats one more piece of fruit each day. The children practised explaining their thinking using mathematical sentences such as, “I know he’s going to have four strawberries because 4 is one more than 3.” 🔢

They then brought the whole life cycle to life through role play, curling up as tiny eggs on a leaf, hatching into hungry caterpillars, wrapping themselves into chrysalises and finally emerging as beautiful butterflies! 🐛🦋

There is so much learning still to come as our real caterpillars continue to change, and we can’t wait to follow their journey together! 💛

🧙‍♀️🧪 Potion Making in Little Scientists! 🫧✨

Bumblebees became little scientists as they mixed, poured and stirred their way through some colourful potion making!

The children experimented with different ingredients, watching closely as colours mixed, textures changed and their potions transformed. We encouraged them to predict what might happen next and talk about the changes they could see. 🌈

There was plenty of sensory exploration too, with lots of scooping, pouring and stirring helping to develop fine motor skills and coordination 🧪💛
