Day one of Nail Technician training 🤍

Today was all about building the foundations — understanding the natural nail, preparation, product application and starting to develop those all-important practical skills.

There’s a lot to learn when you’re beginning your nail career, which is exactly why I believe in taking the time to understand why we do things, rather than simply learning a sequence of steps.

Plenty of questions, plenty of practice and a really lovely first day. 🤍

Does every skin type need a different facial?

Not necessarily.

Learning about dry, oily, combination and normal skin is important, but good facial therapy goes much further than simply matching a treatment routine to a skin type.

Two clients can have the same basic skin type and still need very different treatments.

Why?

Because we’re also looking at the condition of the skin today.

Hydration, sensitivity, barrier health, congestion, lifestyle, homecare, medications, previous treatments and the client’s individual goals can all influence the choices we make.

This is why consultation and skin analysis are such an important part of professional facial therapy.

Rather than memorising a different routine for every skin type, I want my students to understand what they’re seeing, why it matters and how to adapt their treatment accordingly.

Because the best facial isn’t the one that follows a perfect routine.

It’s the one that’s right for the skin in front of you. 🤍

Today we’re focusing on lashes & brows, following yesterday’s facial training.

I don’t always have photographs to share from my training days, and that’s absolutely fine. My students’ comfort and privacy will always come before creating content.

But behind the scenes, the academy has been very busy with lots of different treatments, lots of questions and plenty of practical training.

Exactly how I like it. 🤍

Does glowing skin always mean healthy skin?

We often associate a beautiful glow with healthy skin,and sometimes it absolutely is.

Well-hydrated skin with a healthy barrier and a smooth, balanced surface reflects light beautifully, giving us that natural luminosity we all love.

But shine alone isn’t a measure of skin health.

A glossy appearance can also come from oils or occlusive products sitting on the surface of the skin. And immediately following some treatments, increased redness, warmth and shine may actually be part of a temporary inflammatory response rather than an indication that the skin is healthier.

This is why, as therapists, we need to look beyond the immediate finish of a treatment.

Healthy skin is about barrier function, hydration, resilience and balance, not simply how shiny it looks in a photograph.

The goal should never be to create the most dramatic result for the camera.

It should be to create the right result for the skin. 🤍

A little glimpse behind the scenes.

My beauty training courses are delivered on a private one-to-one basis, allowing each training day to be adapted to the individual student, their previous experience and the areas where they’d like to build their confidence.

There’s time to practise, ask questions and, importantly, understand the why behind the techniques we’re learning.

With almost 40 years in the beauty industry, I believe good training should give you more than a treatment routine, it should give you the knowledge and confidence to understand what you’re doing and adapt it appropriately for your clients.

One of the most common misconceptions I see is that thicker gel nails must be stronger.

In reality, strength doesn’t come from applying more product.

It comes from understanding structure.

A well-placed apex, balanced architecture and correct product application will always create a stronger enhancement than simply adding extra thickness.

Not only can overly bulky nails look unnatural, but they can also affect balance, comfort and the way the enhancement performs.

As educators, our role isn’t just to teach how to apply a product, it’s to help students understand why we apply it that way.

Sometimes, less really is more.

Some of the most rewarding training days are spent with experienced therapists.

Yesterday I welcomed three therapists from the same salon for a tailored Professional Development Day.

Rather than following a fixed course, we focused on the areas that would have the biggest impact on their day-to-day work. From BIAB structure and e-file techniques to product knowledge and troubleshooting, the day was shaped around their individual questions, challenges and goals.

One of my favourite moments came right at the end when I asked if there was anything else they’d like me to go over…

“OMG no… my brain can’t process any more information!” 😂

For me, that’s exactly what professional development is about. It’s not about starting from the beginning, it’s about refining techniques, building confidence, staying up to date and continuing to grow, no matter how many years you’ve been in the industry.

Thank you for such a lovely day. It was a pleasure to spend the day with you all, and I hope you left feeling inspired, confident and excited to put your new knowledge into practice. ❤️

Hard gel is one of my favourite subjects to teach because it often surprises people!

Many assume all gel systems behave the same, but they don’t.

Hard gel doesn’t soak off because it’s designed to create a stronger, more durable structure than soak-off gels. Once cured, acetone can’t break it down, which is why it needs to be removed by filing.

I love helping students understand not just the technique, but the science behind the products they’re using. It gives them the confidence to make the right choices for their clients.
