SEUSSICAL JR AUDITION INFORMATION
Audition: Thursday 10th September 3:10pm – 5pm
First rehearsal Friday 11th September 3:10pm – 5pm
You will be asked to sing 30 seconds of your chosen learnt song from the list below:
1. Oh the Thinks You Can Think (Ensemble)
2. Alone in the Universe (Jojo/Horton)
3. Notice me Horton (Gertrude, Maizie, Sour Kangaroo)
You will sing unaccompanied (no backing track)
You will also be asked to deliver the following monologue below in the style of your chosen character.
I can see that you've got quite a mind for your age!
Why, one Think and you dragged me right onto the stage!
Now, I'm here, there is no telling what may ensue.....with a Cat such as me and a Thinker like you!
Seussical Jr Character List
- JoJo is a thinker with a huge imagination. Whether awkward, rambunctious, or lonely, JoJo’s “Thinks” constantly get them into trouble. Over the course of the story, they learn responsibility and the importance of using imagination for good.
- The Cat in the Hat is the essence of mischief, imagination, and fun. The Cat drives the storytelling and should feel physically agile, improvisational, and comfortable interacting with the audience. Cast a confident comedic actor with strong rhythm and stage presence.
- Horton the Elephant is a gentle giant with a huge heart and unwavering loyalty. He always tries to do the right thing, even when the world doubts him. This role requires one of your strongest singers and actors.
- The. Mayor is JoJo’s concerned but loving parent, who wants the best for their child while trying to guide them toward responsibility.
- Mrs. Mayor deeply loves JoJo but struggles to understand his imagination. She should pair naturally with the Mayor and contribute warmth and emotional grounding to Whoville.
- Gertrude McFuzz is insecure about her one-feather tail and longs for Horton’s attention. Throughout the show she grows into a more confident and self-assured character.
- Mayzie La Bird is glamorous, self-centred, and larger than life. Though selfish, she ultimately realizes Horton would make a better parent for her egg.
- Wickersham Brothers including Wickersham 1, Wickersham 2, and Wickersham 3, are mischievous pranksters who enjoy teasing Horton and causing trouble.
- Bird Girls, including Bird Girl 1, Bird Girl 2, and Bird Girl 3, know everything happening in the jungle and support Mayzie throughout the show.
- Sour Kangaroo is loud, confident, brassy, and unapologetically opinionated. She is not cruel, just bold and honest.
- Young Kangaroo is Sour Kangaroo’s feisty child. Though smaller, they have just as much personality and attitude as their mother.
- Judge Yertle the Turtle presides over Horton’s trial at the end of the show.
- Vlad Vladikoff is the black-bottomed eagle who flies away with the Whos.
- The Grinch makes a fun cameo appearance in Seussical Jr.
- The Whos
The Whos, including First Who Family, Second Who Family, Third Who Family, Fourth Who Family, and Fifth Who Family, are the citizens of Whoville. Encourage each performer to develop a unique personality and sense of community.
- Ensemble
The Ensemble includes Jungle Citizens, Hunters, Circus Animals, Fish, Nurses, Courtroom Attendants, additional Wickersham Brothers, additional Bird Girls, and more. These roles help fill out the imaginative world of Seussical Jr and are excellent opportunities for strong ensemble participation.
