Yesterday was an intense day. In fact, I've had an intense summer really! But yesterday. My first assessment as part of my level 7 course (my assessee was amazing!) which I had to record! Nerve-wracking! 😱 Combined with the deadline for my first big project! Level 7 courses getting you ready for balancing it all I guess! Anyway, somehow I did it all.... and then I was rewarded by The Universe with a beautiful sunset.... oh and gin. 😍

Even though I do the 'non-play' part of EYFS, I'm also really interested in the play because I have children who can't sit yet, who can't attend yet, who can't write letters yet... and I want to help them. I want their reading journey to be successful when it starts. I don't want children as young as 4 already glazing over when they see the phonics cards come out. I want it to be positive. Already I praise where children are, especially with their mark-making. I want them to feel that they are already successful and they are my people, even if they aren't 'meeting expectations'...... yet. They will be with the right intervention and encouragement and feeling that they are already where they should be.

I dont understand what is so difficult about this... however, large school libraries are difficult to navigate for child...

I dont understand what is so difficult about this... however, large school libraries are difficult to navigate for children with literacy difficulties.. the choice of low level, high interest books is limited and often... they are just low level books. I would love ideas of how to change this. And change people's perceptions around this.

Teaching the alphabet, including its sequence, is the structure on which to hang the phonemes and graphemes in certain types of brain. Without this, there is no sense or meaning. If your child is coming up to the end of KS1 and struggling to retain sounds, it might be time to introduce the alphabet.

A slightly pared down kit today to take to Hertfordshire for my second in-person day. I felt I was off to a great start but then.... i realised that my phone hadn't charged overnight (again-- faulty cable i think). So I took another cable, plugged it in the car, switched on Google Maps and my Audiobook and off I went. My phone turned itself off on the M25. Obviously the charge in the car wasnt enough for Google Maps. Managed to remember my way, but then realised I didnt have emergency card or cash... or a plug to plug my charger in! 🙈🙈🙈🙄🙄🙄🤯🤯🤯 Luckily, everyone on my course is great and someone had a plug. I now know there is free on street parking a 10minute walk away from the course venue so I saved myself £9 in parking fees. I must try and be more organised.... oh and practice some test administration. It's an artform, I've decided. And I am great at looking like everything is fine and I know what I'm doing.... drinking w**e and eating pizza if anyone needs me this evening... 🍷🍷🍷🍕🍕🍕🤣🤣🤣

From something which started off from very unpromising beginnings has blossomed one of the most fulfilling and fun tutoring journeys I've ever been on. The experience has taught me a lot. To really see the seed of something when someone is doing everything in their power to avoid showing you their vulnerability... and their true potential. To be there and listen without judgement to anything someone wants to talk about. To be endlessly but gently annoyingly persistent. I've learned about Drill Music, fishing, BMXing, Graffiti, Liverpool FC and energy drinks. I know what leng and dank mean and today I get this card which sums up our shared sense of humour perfectly. I am going to miss these weekly visits so much.... but my work here is done. Onwards and upwards for both of us.

Do you offer snacks to your tutees? I've got an already thriving biscuit tin but I've been thinking recently that they might not offer the best choice, especially for children who've done a full school day already and may be going on to other activities. I'm wondering what the popular choices will be? I am not a fan of fruit yoyos myself, and would definitely choose raisins instead. What would you choose?
