I had a wonderful moment in tutoring tonight.

I've been working with a young lad in high school for just over a year. When we started working together, he really lacked confidence in spelling. He's dyslexic, and spelling was something he found difficult.

Tonight, he came online absolutely bouncing.

He'd been showing off to his mates because he knew how to spell tricky words that they didn't.

He was so proud of himself.

And, in all honesty, so was I.

Because in just over a year, we've gone from a kid who thought he couldn't spell to a kid who thinks being good at spelling is something worth bragging about.

That's a pretty huge change.

And do you know what makes me even happier?

We've done it all through online tutoring.

Sometimes people still have this idea that online tutoring can't provide the same connection or impact as sitting beside a child at a desk.

I think tonight was a pretty good reminder that it absolutely can.

It's not just about teaching spelling.

It's about changing the story a child tells themselves about what they're capable of.

And tonight, he was telling himself a very different story. ❤️

The schools are back… so of course the weather has decided it’s summer! ☀️😂

Yesterday, it was simply too warm to work in the cabin, so we headed outside instead.

We sat on the decking, cushions under us, and worked on spelling. Then we used leaves, feathers and sticks to create a character.

Next week, we’ll write about them.

And what I loved most wasn’t the spelling.

It was watching a child who usually finds it really hard to come up with ideas, a child who doesn’t always have much confidence in their own creativity, just… create.

There was no blank page staring back at them.

No pressure to think of the “right” idea.

Just a pile of natural materials, a sunny afternoon and the freedom to make something.

And suddenly, they could.

A huge part of tutoring for me is getting to know the children I work with and understanding how their brains work.

Because once I understand how a child learns best, I can create lessons that are just right for them.

Sometimes that means sitting at a desk.

Sometimes it means spelling with leaves.

Sometimes it means heading outside with a cushion and seeing where an idea takes us.

Tutoring isn’t about making every child fit the same lesson.

It’s about finding the lesson that helps that child learn.

Today while tutoring, one youngster told me they weren't looking forward to division when they went back to school next week.

So, rather than sticking to the plan, we parked what we'd intended to do and spent the session building their confidence instead.

We started outside collecting leaves.

That wasn't just because I like getting outdoors. It gave them a chance to regulate before we started learning. You know what it's like... as soon as someone tells you you're about to do something you're worried about, your whole body tenses. When we're stressed, learning becomes much harder, so a few quiet minutes in the garden helped them reset.

Back inside, we started with something they already felt confident with: multiplication.

Using the leaves, we made groups (arrays). For 3 × 2 we created three groups with two leaves in each, then swapped it around to make two groups with three leaves. They could see for themselves that the answer stayed the same.

Once they were smiling and feeling successful, we moved onto division.

For 20 ÷ 5, we simply took 20 leaves and shared them into five groups.

Children learn best by moving from concrete materials (things they can touch and move), to pictorial representations (drawing it out), and finally to the abstract (using numbers and symbols).

That's exactly what we did.

Once the drawings made sense, we introduced the empty number line.

By the end of the hour, division wasn't scary anymore.
In fact, they looked at me and said,
"Why has no one ever shown me it like this before? It's so easy!"

Moments like that are why I love tutoring.

Sometimes it's about explaining something in a way that finally clicks. Other times it's about taking learning right back to the foundations and rebuilding confidence from there.

The best bit? We can do this just as effectively online as we can face to face. I've got all the tech to make it work.

Today we were practising our handwriting...

By whittling a magic wand and mushroom.

Yep, you read that correctly!

Handwriting isn't just about forming letters or learning joined-up writing. It also relies on hand strength, coordination and kinaesthetic awareness – our brain knowing where our body is and how it moves.

Whittling develops all of these skills. It encourages children to be aware of where their hands are, use both hands together while each does a different job, and build the strength and control needed for writing.

So today we headed outdoors to practise those skills before coming back into the cabin to put pencil to paper.

The children had great fun, it never felt like "work", and the improvement in their handwriting was clear to see. Best of all, they went home excited because they'd learned something completely new.

Learning doesn't always have to happen indoors.

Alongside Carol's Tutoring, I also train teachers through Love Outdoor Learning, so I can draw on outdoor learning approaches whenever they help a child learn best. Sometimes the best way to improve handwriting starts with a stick and a whittling knife rather than a worksheet.

One of the things I adore about tutoring from home is that we’re not just stuck at a table for hours. For a start, we use the cabin in the garden — a space set up specially for tutoring.

But more than that, we’re incredibly lucky to have an acre garden here. It means the children can take proper brain breaks when they need them: fresh air, movement, exploring, resetting… then coming back ready to learn again. 🌿

At the moment, the polytunnels and fairy houses are the big favourites. Today one of the children even wrote a letter to the fairies and carefully tucked it into the fairy village before heading back to their work ✨

Sometimes the learning happens in the lessons… and sometimes it happens in the small moments in between.

Today finished with a mum telling me that I make her little boy feel smart. That truly means the world to me — but it also breaks my heart a little, because no primary-aged child should ever be made to feel anything else.

Not all children need more pressure.
Some need more time, more understanding, and someone who really sees them.

I work with children who:
– have lost confidence
– have lost their love of learning
– feel anxious about learning
– find school overwhelming
– or just need things explained in a different way

Sessions are calm, supportive, and focused on building confidence first, because that’s where real progress begins.

I currently have two spaces available on Thursdays (4pm and 6pm), either in person (Torphichen, West Lothian) or online.

I haven’t blogged on this page for a long time.

But this needed writing.

Some children are burning out in plain sight because they are compliant.

They don’t cause problems.
They don’t refuse work.
They look “fine” in school.

And then they come home and fall apart.
I was that compliant child.
