TONE

Identifying a writers tone can be tricky.

To identify tone, you should try to identify the emotional meaning of the passage.
What attitude does the writer have towards the topic of the passage?
What words does the writer choose that help you identify that?
If you can identify answer those two questions then you can identify the tone of a passage.

In any critical essay, it is important to demonstrate an understanding of the writers intended audience. For example, Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde with a Victorian reader in mind, Shakespeare very often made plot and character decisions based on who the play was to be performed in front of.

How does this impact your own reading of the text?

Commenting on this in your essay is an excellent way to show the marker that you have deeper understanding of the text.

Determining how a character speaks is a great way to bring authenticity to your creative writing. Try and imagine how your character sounds in your head.

Does your character use slang?
Do they have a particularly strong accent that would influence how you would write the words on the page?
Do they pronounce certain words differently?

It is crucial not to overuse dialogue in your writing but when it is used effectively it can really bring your character to life.
