In 1852 the Bath School of Art was founded and in 1946 the Bath Teacher Training College was opened on the Newton Park campus. The present institution was formed in 1975 as the Bath College of Higher Education through the merger of the Bath Teacher Training College and Bath College of Domestic Science. In 1983 the Bath Academy of Art also merged with the college. In 1992, the college was granted degree-awarding powers and in 1997 adopted the name Bath Spa University College. In March 2005 the institution was granted university status, becoming Bath Spa University in August 2005.

In this month's alumni newsletter, we caught up with Creative Writing graduate, Olivia Tuck 🩵

Olivia shared her stories about her days at BSU, her journey with her poetry, and her adventures in Australia, which all began while studying abroad during her second year 🇦🇺

Olivia's prize winning poetry tackles topics such as mental health, neurodivergency, and queerness, with her most recent success being selected for the Nine Arches Press Primers mentoring scheme, resulting in her poems being published in Primers Volume Eight 📚

BSU alumnus Luke Taylor is set to take his documentary Briefest Encounters on a national tour with Picturehouse Cinemas this autumn 🎥🍁

Briefest Encounters was created by Luke Taylor and Joanna Crosse, and explores the stories of Joanna's grandparents and their connection to David Lean's Brief Encounter. So far, Luke and Joanna's film has been screened at the Little Theatre Cinema in Bath, as well as York, and Piccadilly Circus, London.

Throughout the rest of September and October, Briefest Encounters will be screened across the UK, with Q&As taking place at selected venues 🎤

The tour will conclude in Bath on Wednesday 25 November, which will be one year since the documentary was launched.

In our latest '5 Minutes With...' we catch up with Thomas Murphy, a Philosophy, Religion, and Ethics graduate who has just released his first novel, Seven Seconds! 🎊📚

Thomas talks about what his life looks like now, and how his degree led him to the pathway he's on now. He discusses how the route to publishing his book was certainly not linear, and advocates for using persistence and patience to achieve your goals 🩵

PGCE Primary and Early Years student Liv Hellewell has recently shared her story on securing a job as a Reception class teacher for this September 🩵

After completing her undergraduate degree here at BSU, Liv chose to continue her studies, and trained to be an early years teacher specialising in the 3-7 age group.

Growing up in a family of teachers, Liv saw first-hand the positive difference they could make in children's lives 🏫✨

BSU Graphic Communications graduate Rosie Spring has created the new design for the Bath City FC 2026/27 away shirt 🩵⚽

Rosie was inspired by her fond memories of spending time at the Crescent, sitting in the sun and playing football, wanting to incorporate the city of Bath into her design ☀️

The growing partnership between BSU and Bath City FC allows students the opportunity to work on real-world creative briefs, watching how their ideas come to life.

BSU MA Creative Writing alumna Wendy Kenyon is set to publish her brand new book, Caitlin's Not Sorry, on 28 August through Troubador Publishing 🎊📚

Wendy's new book tackles loss of identity and the realities of modern family life. The story explores the lives of three middle-aged women as they face the challenges of infidelity and sibling rivalry.

Wendy notes that she 'started this novel in the throes of menopausal fury'. Though it is not autobiographical in any way, Wendy feels a great sense of empathy towards her protagonist.
